Make a Conscious Connection Between Business and Emotions

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off
Thursday, April 26th, 2012

We have all heard the saying that a person or situation is ‘all business’ when there is an evident lack of emotion, playfulness, creativity or inspiration. It’s too bad that this label has become so commonplace, because business is all about emotions. Ahem, we think that bears repeating:

best payday loans

 Business is all about emotions.

Here are some reasons why we make such a bold statement.

Emotions are your informers and your response to everything important that happens to you.

You ‘get’ intuitive feelings, hunches and gut reactions to events, people, opportunities and information all day, every day. Then you ‘give’ through your thoughts, words and deeds based on the intelligence of these emotions and sensations. Emotions inform your plans, hiring and virtually every important decision you make in business.

Emotions motivate, empower and inspire you to innovate and create, giving you greater and faster access to profit and success.

When you are emotionally ‘in sync’ with ideas, colleagues and your work environment, you soar with energy, confidence, productivity, insight, satisfaction, accomplishment and enjoyment. Critical problem-solving breakthroughs happen.

Emotions are essential to the activation of ethical values and the ability to build trusting and profitable business relationships.

Emotional honesty and transparency make your level of commitment and accountability visible and desirable to potential partners, employees and colleagues. This creates widening ripples of success. Your emotions also ‘tell’ you whom to trust and how much responsibility you can give others.

Emotions are a continual energy source that can be harnessed to work for you.

Become aware of their potential, and you can consciously grow and apply the intelligence of emotions toward your desired success.

Over the next several weeks, DemGen will share exercises that can help you to systematically develop and apply more Emotional Intelligence, or EQ, in your personal life and your work.

Stay tuned to make the conscious connection!

Project Management

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off
Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

The ability to coordinate people, tasks, time and money. Sounds easy enough …. just like controlling the paths of planes – provide direction and it all moves along smoothly – most of the time!

A key component to managing projects is a system. We use Basecamp, a 37 Signals product, that allows for time tracking, to-do items and milestones to be managed; a place to store files and most importantly, one location for all project communications to take place. Once a new client comes on board, a project is set up and the team is assembled and we start the process!

Being a master communicator is an essential part of Project Management. In our case a great deal of DemGen communication is done via email or Basecamp messages, Skype, and of course, nothing beats a phone call especially when hearing the tone in someone’s voice helps with clarity on a message!

An empowered team is another requirement for project success! Bring together a team that feels confident in supporting the goals and outcomes, is included in dialogue and decisions, and collectively moves the needle forward for results. Each member of the team must own their tasks, be accountable and provide status updates, and ensure their unique strengths are leveraged.

As a Project Manager, we need to be a role model. Treat your team with respect and love, establish motivation and set standards … and above all, BE A MEMBER OF THE TEAM! When the sleeves need to be rolled up – dig in; when the going gets tough – stand alongside the team; and when there is cause for celebration – celebrate. Enjoy the fruits of your management, it is very rewarding!

Trying to manage a project without project management is like trying to play a football game without a game plan.

K. Tate

Operations keeps the lights on, strategy provides a light at the end of the tunnel, but project management is the train engine that moves the organization forward.

Supporting a Virtual Team

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off
Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Pam ChristieMy original title for this post was “Managing a Virtual Team” and then I realized, it isn’t  about the management – it is about the support of a leader that makes a successful team.

How do you support a team of virtual independent contractors? Really in much the same way any team or group should be supported – with love, leadership and laughter.

  • Sending love notes to them “just because”, being available to celebrate with them or help them talk through a concern or issue, finding the best way to handle any lessons that come from results, feedback or completed / uncompleted tasks.
  • Maintaining consistent communication that includes open dialogue through regularly scheduled support calls, emails or messages via a project management tool like Basecamp, even Skype conversations that result from a quick hello!
  • Considering the “whole” person – these people are not just “staff”, they are family! They all have lives outside of DemGen that include extended family, extracurricular activities, hobbies and interests. Getting to know them for more than just their unique abilities on the DemGen team. Being there when a family member is not well, cheering for their kids activities, embracing them fully and completely.
  • Not always being right! That wasn’t an easy lesson – it comes with maturity and being aware that I could learn something from each and every person. I had to let go of some past notions that came from working by myself – now I had a group of people who also cared about DemGen as much as I did.
  • By having fun – heaps and mounds of it! Share jokes, fun videos, songs, crazy theme days – asking them to join the DemGen ‘playground’ … and sure we are serious too, but making every day joyful and fun means we are even better at providing the services to clients and each other!

Directing Operations

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off
Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Pam ChristieThe main task for a Director of Operations – ensure the smooth operation of the daily happenings in the company  …. that’s me!

As you know, there are MANY activities involved in running a business and I have my fingers in pretty much all of it in one way or another. I don’t have to be an expert on every aspect of other roles and responsibilities, just know enough to be aware and be able to support members of the team from various divisions such as Sales and Marketing.

I work on efficiencies constantly, keep a close eye on budgets, delegate duties, provide progress reports, solve problems, celebrate solutions and results, and plan for the future along with members of our Strategic Team.

You might find me on a call with a prospect who wants to better understand how they can work with DemGen, or supporting a team member with an issue that has come up or chatting with Gary Evans, my business partner, about everything from raising children to next steps for the business.

Daily I use tools such as Basecamp  to manage all the projects we are working on and the people working on the projects; Freshbooks  for invoicing, expense tracking, and payment updating; and Highrise  to manage all communications with prospects and clients.

I am grateful to be in this position, I have learned so much, and even though a title doesn’t always truly reflect what a person does, in my case it really means “directing and supporting all things DemGen!”

Tips for Mompreneurs

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off
Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Pam ChristieBy Pam Christie, Director of Operations – DemGen’s April Expert of the Month

One of the most important tips aside from making time for yourself, is giving your children undivided time and attention. This was THE most essential piece for me to stay in love with what I had chosen as my path as a Mom and a Mompreneur! I always made sure we ate breakfast together, then did puzzles, or watched a show, or coloured, or went on a walk …. whatever they chose as the time with Mommy before work began – theirs and mine!

Once we had given each other attention, we could all get started on our tasks for the day. Sure there are times where your day isn’t going to go as planned.  That can be a result of clients, family, or technology – knowing that your children felt loved and supported with their needs before the day “officially” began will make each day more fun and productive for everyone.

For those who have made the choice to have their children learn at home, we found setting up space for them near the office area meant they could seek help when needed and felt included in daily activity. They could see and hear Mommy working, and we also developed signals so they knew when it was okay to ask questions…  To this day (and we now have four teenagers), we still use many of the same signals or body language if they see I am on the phone or deep in thought on typing.

Celebrate your highs and lows with your family – include your husband or partner, and children (or any extended family) in what is happening with your day! Ask them to focus with you on positive outcomes to projects, new clients signing on with you, or even that you get your top 3 completed for the day!!

Children love to mimic us – so let them! Give them an old phone, some pens and post-it notes, even a computer keyboard and their own space. You will love hearing them on the phone. They often have heard us say some of the same phrases over and over that they will use  in their conversations. They can learn about the joys of work from us and we can learn the joys of play from them!

How I Became a Mompreneur

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off
Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Pam ChristieBy Pam Christie, Director of Operations – DemGen’s April Expert of the Month

I started earning my own money at age 8 as a Mother’s Helper for a Greek family that lived 3 doors away, transitioned to babysitting including a family of 4 boys age newborn to 7 (cared for them full days during the summer months as both parents worked) and became a child care service provider to many families over my tween and teen years!

I was married at 21 and we had our first child when I was 25, then three more children – so four babies in five years. We also decided to become a home-schooling family…  So there I was in January 1999 with 4 small children, learning with them daily and still feeling like I needed something for ME! I adored our children and loved being Mommy.  They taught me so much about life…  Yet I felt something was missing for Pam, so the universe provided that next phase.  A program called SEB (Self-employment benefits program). It allowed me to attend classes two days per week, collect Employment Insurance and start a business

Was I crazy? Of course (anyone who knows me will agree)! I was stretching myself very thin – I was exhausted AND exhilarated! In April 1999 I officially started my own business, Research Express (an internet research business) – I remember taking our four children with me to register the business and then we went out for lunch to celebrate.

I found a way to fill that that missing “ME” piece – I was able to add income to our family earnings, stay at home with our children, and keep my mind fresh with learning opportunities which helped us all!

Living Positive, In Gratitude

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off

Pam ChristieBy Pam Christie, Director of Operations – DemGen’s April Expert of the Month

DemGen introduced our team to The Secret when it was released in 2005. This began a journey that changed our lives, as it did for millions of people around the world. The Secret was a way of thinking, being, doing, and having phenomenal success in our lives both personally and professionally!

We were a group of regular people who learned how to apply this powerful message in our lives and it impacted our health, wealth, and relationships …. and ultimately the business.

From there we progressed to The Gratitude Principle by Dan Sullivan of Strategic Coach. It offered quick reminder messages about appreciation and included a 21-day Gratitude Focus workbook. We gave this as a gift to our team and we all learned how to include gratitude in every day!

Next was the The Power, by Rhonda Byrne, same author as The Secret. “The power to have everything good in life is inside you” – who wouldn’t want that wisdom? Believe that you are powerful, and life becomes so much easier and rewarding! You WILL have an amazing life.

The Power of Less by Leo Babauta was next on the journey to living positively and in gratitude. Streamlining our lives by focusing on less and getting more done. We could focus more on living, work less and smarter!  Thoughts from various team members are featured here: http://www.demgen.com/the-power-of-less-review

For me personally, it moved my family from distractions to clarity, from cluttered to free space, and we started new habits and set goals.

Another book that we read and loved was The Power of Giving by Azim Jamal and Harvey McKinnon.  We have always been a company that gives back through initiatives such as Pencils for Kids http://www.demgen.com/about-us/community-initiatives or other charities. We can all create abundance in our lives by giving back, giving provides many benefits and this is not just about giving monetarily. Giving can include time spent with friends, family, business partners, and neighbours; it can mean volunteering time or talents; making donations of food or clothing. It empowers us, brings joy, peace and love, and increases happiness.

All of these gifts were brought to me through my relationship with DemGen and I have shared those gifts with as many people as I can. My life has more abundance, love, gratitude, joy and happiness. I wake up daily feeling that I can make a difference – one step, one emotion, on person at a time!

My Life With DemGen

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off

By Pam Christie, Director of Operations – DemGen’s April Expert of the Month

Gary and I were childhood friends.  Our Mothers have been friends since they were kids! Gary owned a catering business in 1990 when my husband, Dan, and I tied the knot and he served a delicious meal to about 150 of our guests… Soon after that we lost touch…

FAST FORWARD to late 2005/early 2006… Gary called me after speaking to his Mom and telling her what he needed – HELP!  I was already in business for myself for 8 years (working from my home office!)…  So, Pam to the rescue and thus began the “Little Company that Should, Would and Could”!

We knew that it would take lots of blood, sweat and tears to get to where we knew we could be. I was the admin person, marketing, sales support and project manager; Gary was the sales, lead gen, accounts payable and receivable and payroll – now we have a team of experts from all fields!

AND we haven’t looked back.  It has been a beautiful, sometimes bumpy, OH SO so exciting I can’t sit still ride – and I am grateful to him for believing in me and our love has grown, I know when to remove the “shiny” things that distract him, when to set him loose and when to send my love! He knows when to gently guide me, set me loose and give that BIG bear hug!

CHEERS to many, many more years – DemGen is THE BEST thing – other than my husband, Dan and our four awesome kids – to come into my life. I am grateful for very step, stage and emotion we have created with this phenomenal company.
