Living Positive, In Gratitude

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Pam ChristieBy Pam Christie, Director of Operations – DemGen’s April Expert of the Month

DemGen introduced our team to The Secret when it was released in 2005. This began a journey that changed our lives, as it did for millions of people around the world. The Secret was a way of thinking, being, doing, and having phenomenal success in our lives both personally and professionally!

We were a group of regular people who learned how to apply this powerful message in our lives and it impacted our health, wealth, and relationships …. and ultimately the business.

From there we progressed to The Gratitude Principle by Dan Sullivan of Strategic Coach. It offered quick reminder messages about appreciation and included a 21-day Gratitude Focus workbook. We gave this as a gift to our team and we all learned how to include gratitude in every day!

Next was the The Power, by Rhonda Byrne, same author as The Secret. “The power to have everything good in life is inside you” – who wouldn’t want that wisdom? Believe that you are powerful, and life becomes so much easier and rewarding! You WILL have an amazing life.

The Power of Less by Leo Babauta was next on the journey to living positively and in gratitude. Streamlining our lives by focusing on less and getting more done. We could focus more on living, work less and smarter!  Thoughts from various team members are featured here: http://www.demgen.com/the-power-of-less-review

For me personally, it moved my family from distractions to clarity, from cluttered to free space, and we started new habits and set goals.

Another book that we read and loved was The Power of Giving by Azim Jamal and Harvey McKinnon.  We have always been a company that gives back through initiatives such as Pencils for Kids http://www.demgen.com/about-us/community-initiatives or other charities. We can all create abundance in our lives by giving back, giving provides many benefits and this is not just about giving monetarily. Giving can include time spent with friends, family, business partners, and neighbours; it can mean volunteering time or talents; making donations of food or clothing. It empowers us, brings joy, peace and love, and increases happiness.

All of these gifts were brought to me through my relationship with DemGen and I have shared those gifts with as many people as I can. My life has more abundance, love, gratitude, joy and happiness. I wake up daily feeling that I can make a difference – one step, one emotion, on person at a time!

My Life With DemGen

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

By Pam Christie, Director of Operations – DemGen’s April Expert of the Month

Gary and I were childhood friends.  Our Mothers have been friends since they were kids! Gary owned a catering business in 1990 when my husband, Dan, and I tied the knot and he served a delicious meal to about 150 of our guests… Soon after that we lost touch…

FAST FORWARD to late 2005/early 2006… Gary called me after speaking to his Mom and telling her what he needed – HELP!  I was already in business for myself for 8 years (working from my home office!)…  So, Pam to the rescue and thus began the “Little Company that Should, Would and Could”!

We knew that it would take lots of blood, sweat and tears to get to where we knew we could be. I was the admin person, marketing, sales support and project manager; Gary was the sales, lead gen, accounts payable and receivable and payroll – now we have a team of experts from all fields!

AND we haven’t looked back.  It has been a beautiful, sometimes bumpy, OH SO so exciting I can’t sit still ride – and I am grateful to him for believing in me and our love has grown, I know when to remove the “shiny” things that distract him, when to set him loose and when to send my love! He knows when to gently guide me, set me loose and give that BIG bear hug!

CHEERS to many, many more years – DemGen is THE BEST thing – other than my husband, Dan and our four awesome kids – to come into my life. I am grateful for very step, stage and emotion we have created with this phenomenal company.

Evolving Your Essential EQ

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Emotions are your informers and your responses to everything important that happens to you. They motivate, empower, and inspire you to innovate and create, giving you greater and faster access to profitability and success. Emotions are essential to the activation of ethical values and the ability to build trusting and profitable business relationships. That is why emotional intelligence, or EQ, is so valuable to individuals and organizations. DemGen is currently building the team EQ by working our way through reading material and weekly exercises.

Emotions are a continually flowing energy source that affects every aspect of life. Growing your EQ shifts the form of this energy and changes your experience of work, life, and relationships with others. While it’s true that excessive emotion can disrupt reasoning and analysis, it’s also true that lack of emotion can be even more damaging to a person’s career or to an organization. We often do ‘more of the same only harder’ when we encounter adversity; in most situations this does not serve us well. EQ development gives you the tools to respond differently with intuitive, creative wisdom, passionate insights, and purpose-directed choices.

You can systematically apply and develop more EQ in your personal life and your work. Growing in emotional literacy builds personal confidence and competence through practical intuition, emotional honesty, integrity, and energy. Developing emotional fitness grows your authentic presence, trust, resilience, renewal, and use of constructive discontent. Emotional depth enhances your unique potential and purpose; inspires commitment, accountability, and conscience; deepens integrity and increases your influence. The skills of emotional alchemy increase your intuitive flow, reflective time-shifting ability, sensing of opportunities, and your strategic creation of the future.

Group intelligence depends on EQ to be the collaborative and creative cement to a collective IQ. It is prized and cultivated by the world’s top enterprises and undervalued by most others. Effective teams solve problems and seize opportunities by building trust and rapport, sharing talents and opinions, and giving constructive and supportive commentary. High EQ networks of individuals are able to create immediate breakthroughs that can be critical to success!

Client Spotlight: Kris Murray – Child Care Marketing Solutions

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Kris Murray is, “Living the dream!” Through her company Child Care Marketing Solutions, she has helped hundreds of early childhood business leaders and owners grow and prosper through unique strategies that work to attract and retain new customers.

We recently had the chance to chat with Kris about her work.

Please tell us about your business.

Child Care Marketing Solutions provides business coaching, training products, and consulting to child care center owners and managers. We help child care centers and preschools grow their enrollment and revenue, and receive a better return on their marketing investment and advertising dollars.

How did you get started in this industry?

As a marketer who happened to be a mom of young children, I noticed that child care center owners and managers really struggled with the business side of child care. These folks are mostly educators and caregivers, not “business thinkers”. When you find a problem and can effectively solve it for people, that’s a great basis for a successful business.

What challenges have you faced as an entrepreneur?

Like many entrepreneurs, I have many ideas and I love to start new things. The follow-through and completion of ideas, visions, and tasks is the tough part. The DemGen team members help me stay focused and also help me do a better job of optimizing everything we do at Child Care Marketing Solutions.

What’s been the most rewarding thing about being a business owner?

For me, the payoff is when one of my clients tells me how much more successful they are by using what I’ve taught them. I’ve had so many incredible success stories and I know we’ve helped create more stability in the child care industry, which is good for business owners, children, and parents. I am making a unique difference in the world, and that feels really good.

What have you done to increase revenue and achieve your goals?

We have doubled our revenue every year so far (knock on wood!). We do that by closely monitoring our various streams of revenue and having a strategic plan for how to grow each one. Each year we receive more clarity about our best target customer, and we create products and solutions that get results. And lots of testimonials and success stories – your clients can “toot your horn” far better than you can.

How do you manage your time?

That’s been a challenge, but I’m getting better at it! DemGen builds our team, and we’re starting to use online tools like Basecamp, Google Calendar, and TimeTrade to automate tasks and improve communication within the team.

How did you become an expert in this field?

I have a marketing background – that’s all I’ve ever done, for the past 24 years. In addition, many of my best strategies and ideas I’ve learned from Dan Kennedy, who I consider my marketing “guru.” If you’re not familiar with Dan, get his books and start reading.

What programs have helped you the most as an entrepreneur?

I attended Dan Kennedy’s Renegade Millionaire Retreat in 2006 and that was a turning point for me – the concepts laid the foundation for me to quit my day job and start my own coaching / information products business. I am currently in two mastermind programs – my mentors are Fabienne Frederickson and James Malinchak. I strongly believe in the power of the mastermind process and it’s one of the key things I’m doing to continue fast growth of my business.

How do you juggle mothering and running a business?

Of course, finding that balance can be challenging! I’m lucky to have an amazing, supportive husband who has always been willing to help with child care, homework, and even laundry! So that makes a huge difference. If you can carve out some hours to work after the kids are in bed, or in the wee hours of the morning, that will help you get things done and still be there for your kids when they get off the bus. I usually am at my laptop by 6:00 am so I get a lot done in the 2 hours before they wake up.

What tips can you offer those just getting started?

Be persistent – don’t give up. You’ve got to have a burning desire to make it work, or it probably won’t. Find a mentor and/or mastermind group of peers that can support you. Try to be very clear about the value you provide and what problems you solve for your ideal client or customer.

Have there been any challenges and/or benefits to being a woman entrepreneur?

I love my life right now. I absolutely love being a woman business owner and I think it’s a great model for my children. They already think very entrepreneurially. The challenges are many, but the benefits are huge. We can live wherever we want, so we are moving to a small ski town in Colorado. Life is good.

Living the Dream Working From Home

Monday, March 5th, 2012

When I was a kid, 99% of Moms stayed home and raised their children. Today, we live in a completely different society. With the high cost of living, both parents have to work in order to keep food on the table and the bills paid.

I have a 1 year old son and I cannot imagine leaving him with a stranger every day in order to go to work. However, you need to provide for your children so you do what you have to do. I am blessed to work in a “Virtual Environment,” (the office of the future). This way I get to provide for my family and raise my son at the same time. I know that I need to be there for my family every step of the way so that is what I am doing.

There are so many benefits to working from home, and every time I tell someone what I do they say “you’re so lucky”. I agree with them 100%. I am grateful everyday for the opportunity to raise my son and work at my business all at the same time. I feel great when I wake up every morning and start the day; I make my husband’s lunch, feed my little man and fire up my lap top. I am at the office as soon as I wake up. No stress, no commuting, and a big smile. I am ready to put together a sales presentation or write a blog post before most people have even left for work!

The most amazing part is that I work for a company where we help other businesses grow. We help business owners free up time in their lives so they can concentrate on what is most important to them (personal/family time). I can put in an abundant amount of work time, much more than if I worked in an “actual” office. If I was to work in an office and something happened with my son at daycare or I got sick, I would have to leave/miss work and catch up the next day. This would add a huge amount of stress to myself, my co-workers, and my family, and put a hold on whatever I was currently working on. Being at home I can handle anything and EVERYTHING that comes up, I am already at the office. Even on sick days I can still manage to get what needs to be done, DONE!

They say that a happy employee is a productive employee! I will second that 1 million times. The reason for that is in today’s day and age I can work from anywhere. We have a place on the lake that we go to every weekend in the summer, but guess what? Yes, that’s right, we have Wi-FI! I can stay up there all summer if I want to. I take lunch breaks and go swimming. I come back to my “office” with a huge smile on my face, more than ready to work. How would you like a person that is happy, stress free and motivated working for you? The main advantage to working in a “Virtual Environment” is being able to have a whole team of dedicated and motivated individuals working for you, to help grow and expand your business.

If you are trying to start a business or grow your current business, then a virtual team is the way to go. You can be even MORE successful than you are now, and know that whatever comes up; you have not just one person behind you, but a whole team of experts. Take it from me. Even after my busiest day of sales presentations, conference calls, and looking after my son I am more than proud of everything I accomplished that day. Everyone should feel like that after a hard day at “the office’. In a dream world we would all feel that great about what we do for a living. Anything is possible. All you have to do is make the right decisions, and believe!

Does Your Business Think Outside of the Box?

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Established in 1981, The Great Little Box Company knows that their success is due to teamwork. Owned by Robert Meggy who purchased it at the young age of 35, in the midst of a recession, it’s a shining example of a business that thinks just a little differently from your run of the mill company.

What do they do? They make cardboard boxes. Not a particularly exciting product but a necessary one. And that is why this company is so interesting. Just because they don’t provide the most interesting service or product available, doesn’t mean they don’t stand out in other ways.

The largest regional firm in Western Canada, the employees believe in high quality customer service, and James Palmer, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing has a motto: “If you keep your staff happy, they will keep your customers happy.”

The owners believe that teamwork is one of the most important ways to attract and keep the best employees. When people work well together and understand each other’s jobs, they become better at their own jobs and make fewer mistakes.

The Great Little Box Company makes sure that all who work there are involved in the business. They recognize the effort each employee puts into their work and they also share information with them. They want their employees to feel that they are part of the company.

Robert wants the employees to run the company just as if it was their own business. Professional and personal achievements are recognized and celebrated. All departments are given financial incentives, which are paid weekly, one of the most important performance management tools available as far as the owners are concerned as it makes the employees feel appreciated.

Employees also fill out a yearly survey, with more than 50 questions, asking them what they want most and also what they think of their salary. It helps the owners to keep a close eye on the pulse of their company, for where would it be without their employees?

Did these things make a difference?

“In a few months, we really started turning around because we had a whole series of initiatives we were carrying out to change things,” said Robert.

The Great Little Box Company is one of those companies that stands out because it believes in giving back and community initiatives. This year they are helping with a special project that will provide sports equipment for the young people of Smokey Mountain, an incredibly poor area outside of Manila, which is actually a garbage dump. They have committed to providing enough boxes to pack the gear which will be shipped there. More can be read about it here.

Continuing to grow, The Great Little Box Company is one of a few that due to producing a necessary product and also realizing that employees make the company, has actually flourished in this economy. The spirit of the owner as well as those who work there have created a business that is unique it its ability to balance what their customers need and what their employees deserve.

Real Estate Agents Sell With a Virtual Team

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Those in the challenging profession of selling real estate know that the job leaves them with little time to sleep and in a constant state of stress. Not many of them know that there are virtual teams that can carry the extra load for them so they can concentrate on what they do best – sell real estate.

A virtual team can:

Set up and maintain your systems and database.

This helps you with your CRM (contact management software), the basis for all of your client information. If you want repeat business, it’s a must that you keep it up to date. Keeping your contacts organized, booking appointments and scheduling follow ups can all be done by a virtual assistant.

Build your website and blog.

If you want to be known as an agent that is the best and offers the highest quality listings at the best price, you will need a website and a current blog with photos of recent listings, open houses/showings and other info for potential clients. Video works well for this as your customers prefer to search online before requesting to view a home.

Make sure your blog and website are also associated with social media accounts. This is where you can put out up to the minute information on new listings and answer questions or concerns. It’s all about customer service.

Handle your Paperwork.

Creating flyers and forms, completing contracts, conditions and documents – these are all time consuming items that have to be done and hiring those that are the best at this will free up your time to sell more.

Make your calls.

An inordinate amount of time is spent on those dreaded cold calls. Obtaining new contacts and meeting with listing agents can be handled quickly and efficiently. Discussing the most common issues with your clients, such as mortgage amounts, agent fees and information on listings can be done virtually by either telephone, fax or email. As well, your assistant can book appointments, arrange for showings and search the MLS database for homes that meet the needs of your clients.

Buyers prefer to purchase through real estate agents that are efficient, organized and have effective procedures in place. Having virtual help available at all times will separate you from the competition and put you a step ahead!

Why Not Boost Your Productivity?

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

For those of us who wish we could simplify our lives just a little – and which of us doesn’t wish that – maintaining a productive schedule doesn’t always come easy.

What are the most important things you would like to accomplish today? Which things do you really want to do?

This is where maintaining balance and boosting your productivity cross paths. It’s also where  lists, whether you love them or hate them, are important. Some people are expert list makers. They have lists for everything and if you can manage that and it doesn’t take away time from actually getting things done, then you’re already a step ahead of most of us.

The great thing about lists is that as long as you pay attention to them, they will keep you organized. A master list is a great thing to have; one that encompasses both your work and your home life. For the professional list maker, this keeps everything running on an even keel.

For the rest of us, the to do list should become a priority. This is the list that you make at the end of each day with a running tab of everything that you want to get done within the next several days. These are the things which when not written  down, will keep you awake at night, worrying that you have forgotten something important. These are the things that you want to focus on and accomplish as quickly as possible and then get out of the way so you have time to enjoy your life.

It’s always a good idea to put a set amount of time beside any item(s) on your list and have a variety of tasks, some which can be finished quickly and others that may take a bit longer. This way, when you have those periods throughout the day when your energy is lagging, you can look at your list and complete one of the smaller tasks. This is usually all you need to get your focus back.

Getting right to your tasks early in the day will help you accomplish more and if you do hit a period where your energy level drops, it will be easier to get back to your list later in the day if you feel you have already completed the majority of the items.

Remember to take short breaks. Getting up and moving around will increase your energy and also give your eyes a rest, especially if most of your tasks are computer related. Rushing through to finish everything as quickly as you can usually means you aren’t putting your best effort forward. Know when to stop for the day. Not completing everything isn’t the end of the world. Add any remaining items on your list to tomorrow’s to dos. Right at the top so you get to them first.

Another example of a useful list, taken from the master list gurus, is one that you will re-use, such as a grocery list, a travel list or a 4 season list. This last one is a list of the things that have to be done around your home throughout the year. Once the list is made, things can be added or subtracted from it as needed but it will save you time once the original list is there for you.

One final note; remember to keep your list up to date. Remove all completed items and those that are no longer of interest or needed. You’ll notice your productivity increase quickly and at the same time you will get much more from life!
