As a collective group of inspired entrepreneurs, all of us at Demgen pride ourselves on helping others grow their businesses and achieve their goals.  Here are some best practices submitted by some of our very own..
  • Have Fun, lighten things up as often as possible!
  • Empower and support people to learn and grow, even when it doesn’t look like what you might think is “your ideal”
  • Be a “Learning Organization”
  • Get to know your team – what motivates and inspires them
  • Frequent rewards/recognition/signs of appreciation are better than just an end of year bonus or periodic evaluation
  • Leverage others genius abilities with your core abilities
  • Being able to connect the dots – this person, that website, this technology…boom! value created.
  • Staying on the leading edge of technology – and relating it to your business – gives you an edge over the competition
  • Prioritize – what needs to be done now, what can wait…
  • Scheduling time to focus on emails, calls, etc and time for growing the business such as proposals, networking, etc.
  • Knowing YOUR best times of day for tasks – in my case, writing is best done early in the morning; Calls are best in  late-morning and early afternoon; end of day is best for emails, updating reports, anything that doesn’t require all cylinders operating!
  • Only start a business in a field you’re passionate and enthusiastic about – life as an entrepreneur can be a grind sometimes. During the darkest of days, only your passion and enthusiasm will get you through.
  • Know how to hire the right people – spend lots of time in identifying, qualifying and selecting talent. Wrong hires can cost your business a lot of money.
  • Walk the talk to all stakeholders (clients, suppliers, contractors, employees, etc.), i.e. Do what you say you will – and more.
  • Always keep a ear to the ground for growth opportunities – there are tons of them around every corner.
  • Enjoy yourself – entrepreneurship is fun!
I have a couple of things I do. First, I always end the work day by making a list of To-Do’s for the next day and I usually have an approximate idea of how long each item will take. I work best early in the morning and that’s when I run through my RSS feeder for updates on other blogs and also when I make rough drafts for the OMOTF blog. The majority of my calls are in the morning also and I take breaks every hour or so for a small snack, this keeps my energy level up.

Afternoons, I slow things down a bit if possible and I try to get outside for awhile, especially when the weather’s really nice. I also do a few things over the weekend when I can take my time and there are no voicemails to answer or other work interruptions

I find my best plan is mostly laid out the night before, so I have a good idea what my day will be like. I find looking after emails (work related ones) over my morning juice and coffee is best, then I work myself up to work mode and ready to talk with clients. I take a lunch break which starts with some fresh air, 20 min walk, lunch, check emails, then back to calls for a few hours. Before dinner I get things ready for next day then my day is done and no more work until the next am. After dinner, I look after the balance of emails and turn this off. We have to make sure to have family time, personal time and friend time. Keeping a balance is very important or a rut will start to grow, then no one is happy.
