While most companies will agree they need a website, when it comes to the creation of it, sometimes too much time is spent on planning and effect and too little time on the reason for having one.

Each person – and potential customer – who visits your website will have their own preferences as to what attracts them but first and foremost your product or service has to be accentuated.

The easiest way to do this?

Keep it simple and eliminate clutter.

Make a list of the main ideas you wish to get across and in what order they should appear. While what you are providing is the key point, those who come to your website like to see a little personality along with your offer, it gives them an idea of who they are dealing with.

Drab colors are a turn off, avoid them if you possibly can.

It you want to attract attention, think basic classic colors with a touch of brightness. Just like planning a wardrobe, you don’t want to be too obvious but you also don’t want to disappear amongst the peacocks!

Too much text and too much information will chase your readers away.

What is the focus of your business? A product or service?  Information? Depending on what you are selling, short paragraphs with to-the-point descriptions work best. Use as few words as possible to paint a picture of your services.

Take it easy on the number of pages.

While there is no certain method of knowing just how many pages you will need, main headings and drop down menus should be obvious. Eliminate anything that isn’t really necessary. In this way, you have something to offer as a follow up, either in a newsletter or with a product you provide.

Sensible navigation.

Important things first. Necessary but not as crucial things afterward. Simple as that.

Remember, the goal is to get your website up and out there. Too much planning is the same thing as having too many cooks..it spoils what could be a great thing!
