Traveling Tips for Small Business Owners

As your small business begins to grow, you may become faced with a challenge: traveling. As an avid traveler myself, both for business and pleasure, and an obsessive reader of tips/tricks, I’ve been able to accumulate a good bank of suggestions on the best and cheapest ways to travel.

If you’re new to the world of traveling, or just looking for a better way to do it on a budget, check out these suggestions.

1.    List the items you plan to bring, then cut it in half.

This is where you will (slowly) learn to battle over packing. Versatility is key, so pack clothing items that can be used for night and day (like button-up shirts.) Making a list of items you think you need is a good place to start, then eliminate the things you can definitely live without. Take two pairs of shoes, one for any business meetings, and another comfy pair for walking around. A handy little tip for shoes is filling them with small items like toiletries and socks so it eliminates empty air space in your suitcase.

2.    Plan for additional items and pack an extra fold up bag.

Once you’ve eliminated the items you can live without, don’t use that space! You might pick up something on your travels that you didn’t expect. Having an additional bag is handy for separating dirty laundry, lying on the ground to sit, or even wrapping breakable items.

3.    Keep calm and carry on (literally.)

If your trip is only 2-3 days, it’s completely doable to pack everything you need into a carry on (specifically a backpack). These days, carry on baggage can be quite large, so always double check sizes with the company you’re traveling with. Using a carry on eliminates the wait for checked baggage, the small chance of lost baggage, and gives you access to everything you brought.

4.    Take advantage of Wi-Fi.

If Smartphone’s are a businessperson’s best friend, then Wi-Fi becomes your loyal sidekick. The app Wi-Fi Finder locates the nearest free and paid Wi-Fi areas in over 650,000 locations, so you can check and send emails, research something, and post online virtually anywhere. (Side note: This is going to be even easier in San Francisco soon, thanks to Google’s recent $600K investment into making San Francisco parks Wi-Fi friendly.)

5.    Call your bank, credit card company, and cell phone provider beforehand.

It’s really important to give these company’s a heads up when you’re heading out of the country.  Your bank and credit cards providers should know so they don’t accidently cut your funds half way through your trip if their fraud departments detect a random transaction. Your cell phone company can also suggest plans and add-ons that could help you stay connected while you’re traveling.

6.    Take advantage of online check-ins.

This is something I recently discovered. Online check-ins allow you to print your boarding pass before even getting to the airport. This is especially handy when you have no checked bags, because you can head directly to your gate.

Last but not least, do not procrastinate bookings. It’s pretty rare nowadays that airlines, buses and train prices decrease the closer to the date, so you have a better chance of snagging a good deal if you do it well in advance. Now, good luck and happy travels!

Entrepreneurs Can Change the World

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Entrepreneurs Can Change the World
Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

Entrepreneurs are the way of the future. Our ideas change the world.

We take risks to bring new innovative ideas to the marketplace. We don’t have a cushy salary to fall back on and are used to overcoming challenges. We push forward because we believe in what we’re doing and know it can benefit others. We are in the business of inventing and re-inventing.

The best ideas throughout history have come from entrepreneurs that challenged the status quo. Steve Jobs, Sir Richard Branson and Henry Ford have all succeeded because they thought outside the box. They envisioned something new.

Entrepreneurs have the genius ability to go against the tide, look to the future and fill the gaps many don’t even realize exist.

Such is certainly the case for co-founder and head of product design for Tesla Motors, Elon Musk.

After hitting it big with PayPal, Musk could’ve taken the easy route and simply founded another internet company. Instead, he thought bigger and founded a space-transport company, SpaceX and Tesla Motors, makers of the world’s sexiest electric car. (The original Roadster is a thing of true beauty and my favorite car.)

His latest endeavor is even more electrifying. On August 12, Musk plans to unveil the Hyperloop, which he claims is similar to a “Jetsons tunnel that whisks you away”.

In his own words from an interview with Sarah Lacy at PandoDaily:

“This is prompted by the California train thing, it has the dubious distinction of being the slowest train and the most expensive per mile. What is the theoretically fastest way you could get from LA to San Francisco. This system I have in mind, how would you like something that can never crash, is immune to weather, it goes 3 or 4 times faster than the bullet train… it goes an average speed of twice what an aircraft would do. You would go from downtown LA to downtown San Francisco in under 30 minutes. It would cost you much less than an air ticket than any other mode of transport. I think we could actually make it self-powering if you put solar panels on it, you generate more power than you would consume in the system. There’s a way to store the power so it would run 24/7 without using batteries. Yes, this is possible, absolutely.”

If that isn’t enough, Musk also plans to publish his designs publicly which will allow open source development.

Musk’s visionary way of thinking is a common trait for entrepreneurs. Instead of doing what’s easy or simply enjoying the wealth he’s amassed, he continues to push forward with groundbreaking ideas that can change the world as we know it, for the better.

Instead of trying to solve small problems in the marketplace, he’s thinking of the big picture for the future. Musk is living proof that big ideas can be achieved and that by never resting on our successes we can achieve constant momentum in our business.

As entrepreneurs, we all have the same motivation. To truly change the world, we need to be constantly looking towards the future. The menial tasks of the day are always vying for our attention, but small activities will never make a big impact.

The next time you find yourself lost in the day-to-day, take a step back to look in the mirror. Are you thinking BIG or are you acting like your own assistant? You chose to be an entrepreneur for a reason and should always be maximizing your genius abilities.

Dream big. Stay focused. Entrepreneurs can change the world. We’re doing it every day!

P.S.  Here’s the full interview with Elon Musk.  It’s an hour long, but worth the watch…

Tips to Feeling Top Notch at Your Desk

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Tips to Feeling Top Notch at Your Desk
Thursday, July 18th, 2013

It’s no surprise that spending hours sitting in front of a computer screen can make you feel more sluggish than spending hours at the gym. Nothing zaps energy quite like the screen of a continuously running computer.

If you’re feeling the hit, especially with the warm weather coming, you might want to try a few of these tips to help boost your energy throughout the day.

1.    Swap soda for water.

Your favourite carbonated drink might be great at giving you a sudden boost of energy, but switching to water will have infinitely more positive health effects. Drinking water, especially in the morning, can help boost your metabolism and regulate your appetite.

2.    Make yourself a series of small snacks.

If you’re used to packing a lunch for your child, this will be easy enough. Snacking in between meals also helps regulate your appetite, and will stop you from overeating at meal times. It will also help keep you energized throughout the day. Snacks like vegetables and dip, Greek yogurt or Kefir (probiotic yogurt), a handful of nuts, or an apple with peanut butter are all great for in between meals.

3.    Stand up and take a walk once every hour.

If your schedule allows it, make time to stand up and walk around your house or office about once every hour instead of once a day at lunch, and not just to the fridge and back. Walking around for 5 to ten minutes will get the blood flowing, and give your brain a rest, allowing you to head back to work focused and ready to go again.

4.    Exercise your upper body while reading.

If you’re spending time reading emails or looking over documents, don’t be afraid to do some upper body exercises while you’re at it. Bicep curls, chest rows, and punches are all exercises that are specific to your arms and can be done while you’re sitting down. If you don’t have any hand weights available, a large bottle of water or can of soup work too!

If you’re looking for more ways to exercise during your break time at work, there are plenty of little routines that can be done in confined spaces. By focusing on your health at work, you’re not only helping yourself, but also helping your business.

Healthy entrepreneurs and coworkers call in to fewer sick days, and continue to produce great work, which makes for an overall healthier and more productive environment!

What to Do When You Hit A Brick Wall

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on What to Do When You Hit A Brick Wall
Tuesday, July 9th, 2013

A viable business is never smooth sailing all the time. If it were, your business wouldn’t be growing, it would be stagnant. Learning to identify the signs that tell you your business has been too long in a non-growth period and finding out what has caused this are part of your ongoing business education. Realizing that your business is not only NOT growing but is actually boring you can be a wake-up call that something is wrong, not only with your business, but maybe with the way you look at it. When this happens, you have hit a brick wall and it’s time to take a closer look at many things in your life.

14172711-black-and-white-brick-wall-with-hdr-technique

First ask yourself why you feel your business isn’t going anywhere. Is it because of something you did or didn’t do or is it your attitude and the way you are looking at your business that has changed? People change and their businesses should change right along with them. Do you see something as a wall and have the motivation to break through it or does it stop you in your path? How badly do you want to reach the other side?

Sometimes, when you imagine reaching the other side, the options available don’t appeal to you. If that’s the case, then this is a wall that has stopped you for a reason. If you see something you want, then the wall is there to tell you that you have some more work to do. The biggest decision you will make at this point is which scenario fits your present situation.

You don’t necessarily have to knock down the wall or even climb over it. With the right tools and a good attitude, you can open a door in your business and walk right through. The wall itself may actually mean that you are getting close to a long term goal and have hit a plateau. If this is what is happening, there is no need to worry. Take a deep breath, look around at where you are now, regroup and plow forward with your best and most original ideas.

If you’re worried that it is more than that, if you are worried the you aren’t really sure of where you are or where you mean to go, a little more in depth planning will be needed. Maybe you don’t want to lose the position you are at now but trying something new or different scares you – you are afraid to take the risk. Maybe you feel comfortable right where you are – maybe too comfortable but you also have the feeling that you haven’t lived up to your potential.

Step back and take a closer look at where your business is now. Are you still holding on to business methods or ideas that are outdated or are no longer compatible with the way you work? Being busy in or with your business doesn’t mean you have momentum…you can still be running in place. Are you taking action or are you reacting to what is thrown at you each day? Whichever way you act it will either be from the offensive or the defensive – which side would you rather be on? By being on the offense, it shows that you are pushing forward, while running your business from the defense implies that you are reacting – possibly in a negative way – to everything that is thrown at you. It also means that you may be putting up boundaries and walls in place of letting in new ideas.

Follow through on your new ideas and see where they take you. You don’t always need a business plan to get ahead. Be persistent in gradually examining each section of your business and look at what you can do now or in the near future to move ahead. Not everything in your business will be something that needs to be changed. Never take action just for the sake of change, only change the things that no longer work well for you.

You don’t necessarily have to knock down the wall or even climb over it. Use your common sense. You can open the door in your business and walk right through that wall.

Turn the phone off and turn relaxation on

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Turn the phone off and turn relaxation on
Thursday, July 4th, 2013

The virtual world can be a pretty addictive place. We’ve gone from email confined to desktop computers to being able to send message with a few simple taps. But as the saying goes, too much of a good thing can be taxing, and our connectivity with the virtual world seems to be getting ahead of us.

We all know that taking time for leisure can be difficult, but it’s important to not only let ourselves recharge, but give your electronics a break too. Here are five suggestions on how to slowly disengage yourself from your technology.

1. Start by taming the email monster. Emails come in fast and furious, especially since they can arrive at any point in the day. The phenomenon of being reachable 24/7 that the Smartphone created has also become quite the burden for business owners. A good suggestion would be to only check your email twice a day. If you’re experiencing a high volume of inquiries, or you’re waiting for an important email, you can delegate check-ins to a different team member. If you’re looking for someone to handle this, DemGen’s virtual team can answer emails appropriately and efficiently, to keep your inbox looking tidy.

2. Not all social media is a source for news. Social media has the ability to suck people in without even realizing it. If you’re the type of person who idly clicks over to Facebook or Twitter, try to remind yourself that those sites won’t always contain the latest breaking news. If you’re checking them because of constant notifications that need to be attended to, a good idea might be to follow the email model and assign a virtual team member to monitor the activity, which they can check 2-3 times a day, and easily keep up to date.

3. You’ll get a better tan from the sun than your computer screen. Your computer screen might be able to shine pretty bright, but you’ll never get a good tan by sitting in front of it for hours on end. Once you’re done with the computer work for the day, turn your computer off. Turning your computer off (laptops unplugged as well), both saves energy and forces you to find somewhere else to hangout.

4. Network the old fashion way. Instead of sending an email or text RSVP to meet up with a client or colleague, stop by their office and invite them out personally. Head out for coffee or a bite to eat, and while you’re there, make a conscious effort to not check your phone or tablet. Remember appropriate social etiquette, and that checking-in with your phone would mean checking-out of your interaction with them. Don’t be the person with their phone glued to their hand.

5. Swap new technology for old technology. You might come up with excuses to use your mobile phone, tablet, or Pandora, like you want to take a picture, update a status or turn on some music but there’s a way to do all those things without using those devices. Instagram on your phone becomes a Kodak disposable camera, updating your status becomes physically telling your friend a story, and Pandora becomes a great mixed CD or vinyl record. It’s easy to forget that all the great apps we have on our devices are derived from previous technology, and how much fun it can be to use them again.

So, to sum it all up: don’t spend hours answering emails, only check your social media when necessary, turn your computer off, meet up with friends outside of the internet, and remember to enjoy the simpler things. That way, you can disengage yourself from technology and engage yourself in some much-needed relaxation.

Take Mini Breaks From Your Business This Summer

take mini breaks from business

Summer officially arrived less than two weeks ago and for many small business owners feeling the time and cash crunch, a vacation is out of the question. For a season that provides relaxation for many, fun in the sun and long evenings spent with friends, the exact opposite can be true for those running their own business.

How can you get some time off for yourself this summer?

Think of smaller ways to celebrate the season, not all of which will involve getting away.

If you can afford it, a spa weekend is a quick and very relaxing getaway, but leave your electronic devices at home if at all possible! Another idea is a day or two at a resort area or rental cottage nearby. Having even one day to relax at the lake, take the canoe out in the early hours of the morning or spend a late evening around a fire can recharge your energy levels and make you feel better about getting back to work. If nature isn’t your thing, there are usually bed and breakfast inns not too far away where you can sign up for nearby agricultural tours or wine tastings. Whatever fits your interests, there is sure to be something within a fairly short distance that can give you a day’s reprieve from thinking about your business.

While others are spending their summer relaxing, start organizing a mini vacation for later in the year. Prices at most popular areas drop once school starts and September can be a beautiful month to take a week off. If you set everything up right, what is considered a very busy season for small businesses can flow smoothly with minimal input from you while you enjoy a peaceful few days gearing up for the fall and winter.

Not everyone enjoys the muggy, hot weather and if you are one of these and prefer the snow and cold then this is the time to get down to work and move ahead of the competition. Getting your finances in order and focusing on your business through the summer and working extra hard at what you love to do can be a vacation of sorts for some people. Set some end of year goals and use this opportunity to advance professionally. Apply for upcoming fall and winter courses that will help add value to your business, whether it be product or service based. Knowledge about anything that pertains to your business is always worthwhile and should be a continuing effort.

Hire a virtual assistant or team to take over any absolutely necessary tasks for a day or a week and spend each day as a tourist in your own city or town or those nearby. Most of us never take a close look at what our own area has to offer and are often amazed at what is available so close by. Sign up for a tour or one day bus trip; some tour companies even have one day mystery trips with unknown destinations! There are also walking trips, museums and art galleries if you live in or near a larger centre. Concerts and plays are particularly popular during the summer, many of them at outdoor locations. There are also fairs, festivals – the list goes on. Take advantage of your own locale and get out there and do something different.

Even if you aren’t taking a break from work, take some time out to reflect on the past year – your successes, your mistakes – and learn from them. Celebrate your successes and the wonderful summer weather in whichever way you choose, either solo or with friends and family. Don’t forget to take advantage of the early mornings and beautiful sunsets, they’ll be gone before you know it and another fall will be upon us!

Staying Active with a Busy Schedule This Summer

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Staying Active with a Busy Schedule This Summer
Thursday, June 20th, 2013

Gary EvansAny of our clients, team members and friends who are based in Canada or the Northern states understand, this spring was pretty non-existent.  It’s mainly been an extended winter with glimpses of summer…

As we move into summer, it’s important to maximize your time.  Beautiful weather has it’s own agenda.  If you have children that are off from school, it’s even more key to budget your time accordingly.

Busy entrepreneurs and business owners often want more time in the day, but the truth for many is – we’re inherently workaholics.  However, with the right preparation, you can still easily take time off.  Your business can keep moving forward without you.

Planning ahead is crucial.  If you are clear with where you’re going and have the right support team in place, your business can continue to reach goals while you recharge and make new memories with family and friends.

It’s often helpful to start with considering what personal adventures you’d like to have.  (We tend to be much more cognizant of our work agendas and goals.)  Once you have a plan in mind, you can work with your team to ensure everything will be covered in your absence.

Plan to only be reachable for emergency situations.  Personally I scan only for the subject the heading 911 – my teams code for my attention, and it’s rarely used.  This will ensure you cover all bases in advance and can take a step away with confidence.

As an entrepreneur myself, I know how hard it can be to let go, but there is a wide world out there waiting to be experienced by you.  It simply isn’t healthy to live in your business.

Summer is short, so strive to achieve both your work and personal goals…  You can do it!

To your Recharge and Success,

Gary

P.S.  Here’s an oldie but goodie that always reminds me of summer.
