Embrace The Slow Movement in Your Business

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Embrace The Slow Movement in Your Business
Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

If you’ve heard anything about the growing ‘Slow Movement’, then you may have wondered how you could make this practice work for your business. The Slow Movement concentrates on living a life of more enjoyment and less rushing around to get things done, just for the sake of doing them. Its focus is value, both in your personal life and in your business, and that value in your business includes time for you as well as time for your clients.

While very much a proponent of work/life balance, The Slow Movement takes things a step further by incorporating all aspects of your life, ensuring that you are totally involved in every minute of your day, not wasting time on the unimportant.  It takes notice of the fact that fast and busy are not the same as effective and focused.

Three noticeable ways that you can slow down while running your business are:

Stay calm.

Most business mistakes are made when we are under pressure. Decisions that are made in a hurry without listening to your inner voice can be costly. The lost art of reflection before action, spending time thinking things through before rushing into them is one that we should gladly learn to appreciate. It will be of benefit to you in many ways, not the least of which is your business.

Concentrate on value.

Recently, with the accelerating pace of our jobs and the expectations because of this, most small business owners feel they are in a race to always be the best – and the best these days usually means the fastest!  But we aren’t necessarily receiving anything in return for this. Our lives are not improving, we aren’t making more money and we definitely aren’t happier. Our health and peace of mind are both paying the price for our increase in speed. In order to do things well, we need to slow down.

Decide what really matters.

One thing that is epidemic in our society is wasting our time on the unimportant. While The Slow Movement does consider that we rush around too much, it also emphasizes the fact that a lot of the rushing is all in our heads. The use of technology for so many more things than in the past has actually added to our stress by making an app available for just about everything. Step outside of the crowd and be bold enough to do things a little bit differently. Actually live your life!

The Slow Movement can be a lifesaver for those who find their lives filled with too many things to do and too many responsibilities – real or imagined! Taking the time to do things at the right speed and as well as you can – high quality work instead of a lot of work – means your business will benefit and so will you.

Delegate to a Virtual Team for Your Sanity’s Sake

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Delegate to a Virtual Team for Your Sanity’s Sake
Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

As busy entrepreneurs and business owners, we often wear many hats and find ourselves wishing there were more hours in a day.

As your to do list continues to grow, and your inbox and voice mail keep filling up, you can soon find yourself ready to pull your hair out.

Luckily, there is a solution…  Delegate to a virtual team!

The hiring process can indeed add more to your plate as you have to interview, select and train each new member of your team, so why not have someone else do it for you.

Companies like DemGen have built a robust team of experts for pretty much any service you could require.  Instead of hiring an assistant, a web designer, a graphic designer and copyrighter separately – they’re all in one place, already vetted and ready to get started.

Instead of waiting until you’re overwhelmed, stressed and burned out, proactively hire a virtual team.  Let’s face it, you’re doing your business a disservice by trying to do it all yourself.  You are the visionary and leader, and should only be spending your valuable time on activities related to your unique expertise.

Resist the urge to hire the cheapest you can find, as it will just create more headaches in the long run.  Remember the old adage, “You get what you pay for.”  For your business to be the best, you need to surround yourself with the best.

Don’t wait to delegate.  Start today!

Take Mini Breaks From Your Business This Summer

take mini breaks from business

Summer officially arrived less than two weeks ago and for many small business owners feeling the time and cash crunch, a vacation is out of the question. For a season that provides relaxation for many, fun in the sun and long evenings spent with friends, the exact opposite can be true for those running their own business.

How can you get some time off for yourself this summer?

Think of smaller ways to celebrate the season, not all of which will involve getting away.

If you can afford it, a spa weekend is a quick and very relaxing getaway, but leave your electronic devices at home if at all possible! Another idea is a day or two at a resort area or rental cottage nearby. Having even one day to relax at the lake, take the canoe out in the early hours of the morning or spend a late evening around a fire can recharge your energy levels and make you feel better about getting back to work. If nature isn’t your thing, there are usually bed and breakfast inns not too far away where you can sign up for nearby agricultural tours or wine tastings. Whatever fits your interests, there is sure to be something within a fairly short distance that can give you a day’s reprieve from thinking about your business.

While others are spending their summer relaxing, start organizing a mini vacation for later in the year. Prices at most popular areas drop once school starts and September can be a beautiful month to take a week off. If you set everything up right, what is considered a very busy season for small businesses can flow smoothly with minimal input from you while you enjoy a peaceful few days gearing up for the fall and winter.

Not everyone enjoys the muggy, hot weather and if you are one of these and prefer the snow and cold then this is the time to get down to work and move ahead of the competition. Getting your finances in order and focusing on your business through the summer and working extra hard at what you love to do can be a vacation of sorts for some people. Set some end of year goals and use this opportunity to advance professionally. Apply for upcoming fall and winter courses that will help add value to your business, whether it be product or service based. Knowledge about anything that pertains to your business is always worthwhile and should be a continuing effort.

Hire a virtual assistant or team to take over any absolutely necessary tasks for a day or a week and spend each day as a tourist in your own city or town or those nearby. Most of us never take a close look at what our own area has to offer and are often amazed at what is available so close by. Sign up for a tour or one day bus trip; some tour companies even have one day mystery trips with unknown destinations! There are also walking trips, museums and art galleries if you live in or near a larger centre. Concerts and plays are particularly popular during the summer, many of them at outdoor locations. There are also fairs, festivals – the list goes on. Take advantage of your own locale and get out there and do something different.

Even if you aren’t taking a break from work, take some time out to reflect on the past year – your successes, your mistakes – and learn from them. Celebrate your successes and the wonderful summer weather in whichever way you choose, either solo or with friends and family. Don’t forget to take advantage of the early mornings and beautiful sunsets, they’ll be gone before you know it and another fall will be upon us!

How to Take a Vacation When You’re Busy

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on How to Take a Vacation When You’re Busy
Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

Yay! Spring/summer is finally here!

The days are getting longer. The birds are chirping and everything is in bloom. Sometimes it’s hard to focus on work, when what we really want to do is play outside.

As busy entrepreneurs and business owners, we don’t usually get the luxury of paid vacation time. However, we also aren’t doing our best work when we’d rather be somewhere else.

Here at DemGen we embrace flexible work schedules when possible. As long as the team delivers high quality work on deadline, we’re not concerned about where or when it’s completed.

With mobile technology, these days you can work from pretty much anywhere. Whether strategizing and making notes from the forest or sending emails from the beach – it’s possible!

At the same time, sometimes it’s healthy and necessary to take a step away, disconnect and do no work at all. Often the greatest insights come when we’re twice removed from work. But with a busy schedule – how do you actually do it?

With the right systems and team members in place, you should be confident in handing over the reigns for a period of time. Be sure to define expectations and deadlines.

Though you can rest assured that your team can always reach you in emergencies and you can reach them via your cellphone, resist checking in every minute. Have faith in your business, systems and team – and most importantly yourself. Your business ‘machine’ can run without you.

If you feel there’s truly no way you can get away, perhaps you need to outsource some tasks to free up some of your time. Companies like DemGen allow you to delegate whatever projects or processes you choose. We can also help you to improve your systems and put your business on autopilot.

For April Fools 2012, we offered Business Sitting services. Intended as a joke, we were surprised at the amount of interest it attracted! Though we wont actually water your plants or feed your pets, we will maintain all of your business activities and keep your clients happy on your behalf while you’re away.

Though summer hasn’t officially started yet, time flies and it will be over before you know it. Start planning now, so you’re free to find adventure when summer does begin.

Outsourcing for Success – Who, What, When, Where, Why and How to Outsource

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Outsourcing for Success – Who, What, When, Where, Why and How to Outsource
Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

Ready to start outsourcing?  This post will explain who, what, when, where, why and how to do it.

Who?

Who needs to outsource: Everyone.  There is no one on Earth who truly loves doing every task.

Who to outsource to: It depends on what you need.  The key is to outsource to companies or individuals who compliment what you provide.

What?

The best place to start is usually with what you’ve been procrastinating with…

It tends to be something you hate doing or aren’t familiar with. The task ends up being pushed off and lingering on your to-do list, only to take longer than you know it should when you finally do get to it.

We’ve all been there and often overlook the fact we could simply outsource it.  (I hated doing dishes and would let them build up.  Then I outsourced to a dishwasher and felt a weight lift.)

When?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, working long hours or just losing that loving feeling – it’s time to outsource!

We all have special gifts and talents.  When we start to lose the excitement for what we do, it’s usually because we aren’t operating within our genius abilities.

(If you feel an urge to delegate all of your work like this guy did, you should probably look for a new gig instead…)

Start outsourcing to get back to doing what you do best!

Where?

It’s key to outsource within your market.  If you’re selling to North America, outsource likewise.  People on your continent better understand the nuances and your tribe.

We’re also in a tough economy, so it pays to give back.

Why?

“You are a unique and beautiful snowflake.”  Appreciate yourself and your talents.  Outsource the rest.

Your bottom line, your to do list and especially your stress level will thank you.  It’s not practical to hire full time staff for every conceivable position, nor are you at your best when you’re trying to juggle doing it all yourself.

Outsourcing allows you to delegate all of the non-essential tasks that are stressing you out, while saving you money over traditional employees.

How?

It’s best to begin by starting a list.  What do you want to delegate?  Which types of people do you want to work with?  Think long-term.  Ideally, you want to create a lasting relationship.  How can you feel confident and free?

In the interest of making it easy, you can start right here!  Download our ebook 101 Ways a Virtual Team Will Grow Your Business from the right sidebar or schedule a Discovery Call.

Otherwise, just do your research.  If you can’t find the perfect company, team or person yourself, we guarantee we can find them for you.  If they aren’t already on our team, we’ll search for the perfect fit for you (with no obligation).

In conclusion…

Success isn’t judged by how much you do.  What’s most important is excelling at what you do best.

You already know what that means to you.  Own it.

We’re frequently sitting at our desks all day (and many nights) working.  This somewhat shocking infographic stresses the importance of regularly exercising at work.  All of the success in the world is meaningless if we aren’t around to enjoy and share it.

What do you need to start delegating so you can get up and get active?  Start today for the sake of your business, your family, your friends and yourself!  It’s as simple as getting out of your chair…

How to Thrive in a Virtual Work Environment

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on How to Thrive in a Virtual Work Environment
Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

With the focus on telecommuting and remote workers in the news lately, many people are taking sides on an issue that has become quite controversial, without really knowing what it means to work virtually or how to be the best worker they can be, virtual or not.

The virtual lifestyle is idealized by many. A huge percentage of employees and those who are unemployed state they would love to work from home, without realizing that working from home is still work, it isn’t a free pass to spend your time doing what you please during your work hours.

virtual office environment, how to thrive in a virtual work environment

Be realistic.

Research virtual work and understand the meaning of it. Working from your home doesn’t mean someone has waved a magic wand and you can sit at your computer all day doing nothing. The same rules apply to your job whether you’re at a corporate office or working from your home office.

Get organized.

When working from your home office you are in charge of yourself. Without someone keeping track of your work and how much time you spend at your tasks, you need to be disciplined enough to have your life in order. Working virtually is wonderful when it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle but it will be up to you to make it work that way by organizing your home and office in such a way that one isn’t interfering with the other.

Put in the time and pay your dues.

Most of us who work virtually have already spent many years working in an office and for large companies and have the skills to show for it. The experience gained and the knowledge we’ve acquired is priceless. Soft skills such as flexibility and a willingness to learn are equally if not more important than computer skills. A great work ethic as well as integrity are highly valued and will be essential if you wish to succeed.

Be aware.

Working remotely or from your home is different for an employee of a company than it is for an independent contractor. Check the guidelines for your province or state to see how this will affect your income, your tax deductions and other laws pertaining to your situation. You have to decide if working from home is something you want badly enough to overcome your reservations about the types of work that are available and, if so, put in the effort to pursue the right option for you.

Remember, working virtually isn’t easy. Just like everything else, you will have to work at it. It won’t be the perfect solution to all of your childcare and commuting problems and it also won’t work if you have problems dealing with others.

Decide if it is for you, look into the skills and experience you will need and give yourself the green light if this is an option that would work well with your life.

Strategies to Work Smart Not Work Hard

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Strategies to Work Smart Not Work Hard
Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Many entrepreneurs feel that a testament to how serious they are about their business is gauged by how many hours they put in.

This is a major misconception.  The key to success is working smart, not hard.

Take a step away

Though there are often crunch times that require putting in long hours, doing so on a day-to-day basis is not sustainable.  The mind, just like the body, needs rest to rejuvenate.

To put this into perspective, take a moment to think about your greatest business ideas…  When did they come to you?  Chances are, it wasn’t after a 12-hour day at the computer.  More likely it was during a break, where you weren’t officially working – on a walk or in the shower.

Less is often more when it comes to creating brilliant strategies and ideas.

To feel that long hours justify great work is a natural human tendency.  We want to do our best and feel time is relative to performance.

Those random strikes of insight that tend to hit when taking a step away, are often the million dollar ideas.

Have a healthy work / life balance

Having a healthy work / life balance will also help to keep you energized and inspired.

Putting in too many work hours can have a very negative effect on quality of life.

Eating ‘fast food’ instead of nutritious meals do nothing for brainpower or energy levels.  Here are 5 tips to be a healthy entrepreneur.

Family and friends are often put on the backburner, though the to do list doesn’t have feelings and will still be there tomorrow.

Delegate, delegate, delegate

Let’s face it…  We’re willing to put in long hours because we love what we do.  It’s easy to get lost in our work.

But surely you don’t love every aspect of your business…  There are certain genius abilities and special talents that you’ve always had that led you to do what you do – those should be your primary focus.

There are people in the world that specialize in any task imaginable.  If you don’t like doing something, don’t do it – delegate it.

DemGen was created based on the principle that there’s a specialist for every role that loves to complete the tasks you may not be interested in or all that accomplished at.

Give yourself a break

As entrepreneurs, we’re always working in spirit; so don’t be hard on yourself for taking a step away from the office.

These days technology lets you remain connected at almost all times, if you so choose.  If there’s an emergency that requires immediate attention, you’ll surely be the first to know.

Make an effort to work smart instead of hard and you’re sure to see great results!
