Recently our team chose The Power of Less by Leo Babauta for our quarterly book review.

Our thoughts on the book are below.

The author’s suggestion of setting small achievable goals, (or milestones to larger goals), so that results can be noted and celebrated, is a great one. I implemented his method of mailbox/inbox clearing some weeks ago. Still, my tendency is to hang on to tasks that stack up in email. Without being perfect at the new method, I am regularly eliminating, paring down, and opting out of newsletters that are not my priority (now) and feeling good about the process. I also incorporated a change that has me celebrating another personal goal: choosing half or more of my daily diet to be raw foods. I immediately noticed the benefits in energy and focus and look forward to celebrating future health benefits as well. I recommend The Power of Less to everyone.

The Power of Less was an amazing gift to our family and our home office. It moved us from distractions to clarity, from cluttered to free space, and we started new habits and set goals.

The first thing I implemented after reading the book was setting a daily top three, that has allowed me to be more productive. I have also stopped multi-tasking every moment and focus on each task with full attention. As a family that works and learns from home, the Power of Less also introduced us to many life-changing thoughts and ideas so we can live the life we deserve!

I absolutely loved the book, here is why:

-I could relate with the author, loved the personal aspect of it

-loved the breaking down of goals

-loved finding out what your necessities are and dealing with it

This book makes everything seem so simple and really it is. I loved the 3 important tasks and having at least one of those tasks relating to your long term goal, this totally makes sense. As well as not adding other tasks to your list until all tasks on the list have been completed, again makes perfect sense, otherwise you tend to leave the tasks on the list that you really don’t want to do. I have implemented both of the above as well as the steps to de-cluttering my home and going through one room at a time and getting rid of the unneccessary things either by donating or throwing away. One pile at a time and I will be de-cluttered!!

At first I didn’t know if I liked the book when I started it but as I got into it I really found things that I knew I would be able to implement. I really am taking to heart a lot of what has been said in the book. Forming habits, starting small. I’m on a weight reduction program and I find that if I focus on a weekly goal instead of a big total goal everything doesn’t seem so overwhelming. Every day now I also have been writing my 3 important tasks at the top of my notebook and feel very excited as I cross each off. Thanks for sharing this book with us!

I was a little unsure as I started the book. To me it read like stereo instructions. But the more I read, the more I realized there were things I could use in my own work/personal life that would be a great help in getting me and keeping me on task. Little goals to get to those big goals. I’m keeping tabs now and watching way more closely what I”m doing. It’s keeping me more focused on those end goals. I’m sure that’s what will put me over the top!

The Power of Less is a friendly book. It provides a gentle reminder that life is a gift – to be cherished, savored and enjoyed with clarity and purpose.  Babuata does not dwell on how we may have become entangled in the loose ends we all find ourselves chasing from time to time but he does give smart, straightforward advice on how to gain our bearings and untangle the mess. Recognizing that our time and attention are valuable human resources, Babuata encourages his readers to identify and explore their personal values before deciding on how to spend those commodities. His methods steer readers away from the stress of  confused priorities and meaningless demands toward the greater enjoyment and ease of focused, purposeful action.

The practical steps he outlines can be applied immediately, without cost, and regardless of the nature of one’s personal preoccupations. Best of all, the book follows through on his message of simplicity by forgoing the all too common practice of advertising and up selling another branch of his business. The Power of Less is an example of what Babuata suggests we can all be – self-contained and capable of tremendous impact.

I was a little unsure when beginning the book, mostly because I have been a long time reader of Leo’s blog posts and wasn’t sure if there was much more he could teach me. I did learn to take the parts of the book that pertained to my situation and tweak them to make them work better for me. There is something in this book for everyone!
