Client Update: Denise Clelan – Clelan Coaching

Thursday, December 18th, 2014

Denise_Clelan1.  Since we last interviewed you, what developments have there been with your business?

We’ve launched “The Conscious Entrepreneur” teleclass series, designed to give entrepreneurs a peak under the hood of what’s possible for them through CORE Energy™ Coaching. In addition, for the past several months I’ve been publishing Wisdom on Wings, thought provoking content to support entrepreneurs in their personal growth and fulfillment. And it’s exciting to note that team and individual coaching relationships have continued to build and are near full capacity.

2.  What trends in business did you notice last year?

I really haven’t seen a clear trend per se. Here in the U.S., many small business owners seem to be feeling their way through the “new norm” with the impact of health care reform and increases in taxes and regulations. By their nature, entrepreneurs are brilliant at seeing opportunity even when the odds seem stacked against them. However, most are finding it more difficult than ever to reach a level of predictability from which they can confidently move forward. There is a lot of
unease and this seems to be translating to more measured risk taking than in other times.

3.  What was your biggest accomplishment last year?

I’d have to say that witnessing such profound shifts in my clients’ lives—watching them uncover what’s been awaiting their discovery for years and then using it to propel themselves farther than they ever dreamed possible—would have to be my
biggest accomplishment. And personally, I’ve found real joy in some of the most surprising places. It’s been deeply fulfilling.

4.  What is your biggest goal for next year?

In June, I’m launching a 6-month program designed specifically for successful entrepreneurs who are committed to personal growth, and who want to enrich their lives in a meaningful way. Each program group will have no more than 10 attendees, allowing for meaningful dialogue and rich connection. I wish I could describe how powerful this experience will be! It’s one of a kind and participants will walk away revitalized– knowing themselves better than ever before. They will understand and will live out their own personal formula for confidence, success, and inner contentment. Very, very exciting! Anyone interested in knowing more should really check it out on my website and seize the opportunity to learn more.

5.  What services do you utilize DemGen’s virtual team for?

I primarily utilize the DemGen team for marketing, graphic design and website management. I love that they can pull all of the various pieces together for my business, enabling me to focus on creating value for my clients.

6.  How has working with DemGen’s virtual team helped support your business growth?

It’s one thing to have an idea, yet another to stay on track and see that idea come to fruition. Having a strong team supporting me, gives me space to dream and create without the distraction of wondering HOW I’ll put it all into action. For years, that was a missing piece for me and it definitely slowed my growth. There’s no doubt that having DemGen’s team behind me has moved me much more quickly from thought to action. And I absolutely love the fact that I’m able to access whatever type of talent is needed to accomplish the goal, without having to personally search to find it.

Client Update: Michael Williams – Mosaic International

Thursday, December 18th, 2014

photo-of-MW-squared1.  Since we last interviewed you, what developments have there been with your business?

Since the last interview, my business has continued to grow.  Most importantly I have been able to focus on what I do best and continue build an incredible team around me who also love to do what they do.  I have brought on a new coach who is incredible at helping entrepreneurs and their team members achieve their goals through an incredible process she created.  My best friend and prior business partners launched The Strategic Entrepreneur Podcast which was in the top 10 on New and Noteworthy for several weeks!   We have seen continued progress internally and with the entrepreneurs we serve.

2.  What trends in business did you notice last year?

I have been seeing a major increase in transformational conversations rather than transactional ones.  MOSAIC is a highly relational organization and this is an exciting trend to see.  People are more “connected” than they ever have been before.  By “connected” I am referring to technologically connected.  Most of us are tied to some kind of technology, whether a phone, a laptop, an ipad or tablet, etc.  Even though we are so “connected” technologically, we are so incredibly disconnected in so many other vital areas.  We are disconnected from ourselves, from what matters most to each of us (family, friends, relationships, experiences, nature, etc).  This is a major problem and one that MOSAIC is seeking to address in 2015 and beyond.

3.  What was your biggest accomplishment last year?

Last year (2014) was a year of exploration.  It was a year of getting grounded, focused and clear about our genius abilities.  We took significant time working on the business while still making massive progress toward one of the best years in the history of the company.  I was able to take more than 150 completely free days where I was disconnected from work and doing things that were rejuvenating!  Our relationships with our best clients were strengthened, and we were able to say “no” to some good opportunities which empowered us to be available and ready when the GREAT opportunity came our way!  All in all, we made some great progress in 2014 and that is a major accomplishment in my eyes!

4.  What is your biggest goal for next year?

The Biggest goal for next year at MOSAIC is that we will have the most fun we have ever had, doing what we love to do!  We LOVE helping people, dreams and experiences come alive.

5.  What services do you utilize DemGen’s virtual team for?

We currently utilize DemGen’s Virtual team as my primary Support Partner.  Kim Miller has been a vital part of our team.  She has helped me be more productive, keep me in my genius abilities and has helped me spend less time in front of my computer and more time working with people, facilitating learning and coaching clients!  It has been a true WIN-WIN!

6.  How has working with DemGen’s virtual team helped support your business growth?

SEE ABOVE for this one.  Kim has truly been an angel for me!  I was spending approx.. 4-5 hours a day on my computer and in emails.  This last week I may have spent a total of 5 hours on email thanks to Kim!  We have come up with a great system that seems to be working well.  This has empowered me to do the things that matter most to me (and email is not one of them).

The Basics of Simplifying Your Business

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

simplicity  As the year starts to roll to its inevitable close, business owners are once again rushing to get too many things done so they can have as perfect a Christmas as possible. There are multiple to-do lists:  one for work, one for shopping and others for the new year and new goals they wish to meet.

It’s time to put down the lists, decide what really matters to you and stay focused. This is called prioritizing and if you can’t make up your mind what’s important, what you really want and why you’re in business, it may be time to do a complete overhaul, especially with how you deal with the various parts of your life.

Get back to basics. Once you decide to only concentrate on the things you love in your personal life, it won’t be long before it’s reflected in your business. The more you have, the more complicated life becomes and there is such a thing as over abundance. Downgrade by deciding which of your products or services are the most useful to your customers, are financially viable and result in the largest profit for you. Many businesses offer too many choices and if they have to hold items in stock, it costs them. The cost is then reflected in how much the customer pays. Don’t be a business owner who is making his customers pay for his bad choices.

Most of your clients can identify with this belief and keeping in close touch with them, perhaps sending out an end of year email asking what they appreciate most about your business can help you decide where you’d like to concentrate in the new year.

Minimize your scheduled activities. You’ll find that the less you have to stick to a schedule, the more relaxed you become. This helps creativity, something missing in most businesses these days in huge amounts. Don’t just organize, re-organize and don’t trust everything to your computer. Paper has its uses and one of them is that it doesn’t need an internet connection. Technology is a distraction and a huge time waster if it isn’t used for productive purposes so turn it off so you can concentrate. We are overloaded with gadgets that take up huge amounts of time and show little in return. Too much information, too many choices, leads to too much stress.

Keep your work and your personal life separate. I know that many people find friends and even mates through the workplace or through business but it’s refreshing when you spend your leisure time with others who have absolutely nothing to do with your workday. It gives you a break from thinking about your business, talking about your business and worrying about your business.

Decide which parts of your business you really enjoy and that you’d miss the most if they weren’t there. Concentrate on those tasks, outsource the others to someone else. Wealth is measured by many others things besides dollars. It’s measured in happiness, confidence in your abilities, and enjoyment of your life as it is now.

How Self-care Helps Your Business

Tuesday, December 9th, 2014

naturalnewagemumRunning a business, especially on your own can exhaust you and deplete both your physical and emotional resources. How health is affected by running a business is a serious issue that most business owners don’t take into consideration when they start a business, but once they have been a business owner for a number of years, the consequences of overwork become obvious.

Self-care has a very close relationship to your feelings of self worth and integrity. While many of us think nothing of supporting others and giving them our time, we tend to ignore our own needs. On our list of priorities, we are somewhere near the bottom, if we’re on that list at all.

While we busily work away on our business, for awhile we see continued success because of the hours we put in but at some point that changes and we cause actual wear and tear on our physical and emotional selves. Once we start to take better care of ourselves, this is reflected in our business because we make better decisions. What kind of decisions do you tend to make when you are frantic and hurried, overtired and disorganized?

Another aspect we ignore is taking the time to grasp opportunities to learn.  Continual growth of our business is contingent on our ability to grasp new concepts and bring our business from where it once was to what it could be and should be. Moving forward isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity and in order to be efficient at what we do, we have to replenish what we use and that includes our energy.

Consciously working at challenging yourself means taking your health seriously. Good health improves your concentration, speeds up your ability to learn and because of this makes it easier to commit to and attain your financial goals. What surprises many business owners is that they can be an example to those just starting out and one of the most important things you can teach new business owners is that they are more than just their business.

Slowing down and becoming less involved in every minute of your business gives you clarity. It helps you to face your business fears and set more realistic expectations. You can’t accomplish everything on your own and if you feel you need help, there are virtual teams that can take on some of your work. If you think they are expensive, aren’t you worth it? The support alone that they can provide will make a huge difference in how you feel and actually help to improve your business.

Coping with Extreme Business Changes

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

business changes Change is fluid in life and adapting well to the results of change comes from practice and a strong faith in your abilities.

Business changes are much the same and in order to make it through them well, it’s necessary to concentrate more closely on not just the final results of the changes and how they affect your business but also on the steps taken within the business to alleviate the worst outcomes.

Businesses today have changed and constant upheavals seem to have become a way of life. Whether in a large company or in a smaller business run by one person, things are no longer static. Instead of feeling like a victim of the times and worrying about how the changes will affect you, it’s better to keep your reactions under control. This gives you more of a sense of control over where your business is heading. While there are outside circumstances that you can’t do anything about, the small day to day things in your business are always under your control and being objective about these will help you when everything seems to be changing at once.

With the turnover in business strategies, marketing techniques, new products and updated services that are occurring now, always being prepared is good advice. Rather than expecting your business to continue with the same employees, services, customers, etc., notice the small signs that tell you when things need to be different. Many business owners refuse to look reality in the face and don’t realize until too late that by not accepting change, they have put their businesses in jeopardy.

Look at all of the possible outcomes. When extreme events happen within your business, list all of the best and worst things that could happen because of it helps you to prepare a strategy for anything on your list. Bringing in any outside resources you may need, seeking advice from others who have made it through similar processes and deciding what is a priority will help you cope with emotions that may be running wild, exhaustion from stress and worries over your future.

Keep in mind that not all modifications that you need to make will be long term, in particular the more extreme alterations. Sometimes, due to the current business climate, challenges will arise that are complete unexpected, especially financial ones. Unfamiliar challenges need to be addressed immediately, even if only with a stop gap measure that is put in place for a short period of time, until you learn more about what you are dealing with.

Remember, that whatever changes are taking place, people and their concerns have priority over things, previous processes and your personal feelings that arise from emotion attachment to the way your business has been up until this time. Taking care of difficult and critical issues is something you will need to learn to have to deal with a business owner. Communicating with all involved and keeping the lines of communication open will help everyone to make it through whatever business challenge you are facing and better prepare you for any future changes.

Staying Focused on Your Business

Tuesday, November 25th, 2014

blog post image    Speaking with long time business owners can sound repetitive. They tell you they have tried to maintain their interest; have kept lists of goals and spend time on marketing in new and more efficient ways.

But their focus is gone. Whether through lack of interest and boredom with what they are doing or flagging motivation, it all amounts to the same thing. The excitement for their business is gone, not just for the products they are selling but the whole idea of running a business at all.

Is there a way to bring that back? Is it possible to stay focused on your business in the long term?

The word focus has several definitions, both as a noun and as a verb but the two most prevalent are being able to “pay particular attention to” and “the center of interest or activity”. Back when your business was shiny and new both of these were easy. Dreams of success and a perfect future filled with everything you could possibly want filled your days and helped you along. You had a new product that you wanted to tell everyone about and one day ran into another as your business grew.

But years afterward, what once was exciting can begin to look a little tarnished and stale. Same old products, the same old business chatter, nothing changes much. How can you turn that around?

The ability to focus is an actual quality. It doesn’t come easily to most. There are actual studies done which show that men’s brains are able to focus more intently on one thing at a time than women’s. However, women are better at collaborating so in the long run, both men and women are wired to run businesses extremely well in their own way.

Being able to focus is something you can practice and through time become better at. It’s a discipline just like other talents and while some are born with a greater ability to focus well on projects, the rest of us can learn to focus through determination and repetition. Don’t feel that you are unsuccessful because your focus on your business is declining. Look into other reasons for your lack of interest. Could it be time to change your business, whether through the types of products or services you sell or the way you sell them? Could it be that you need to slow your pace and spend more time on outside interests? Quite often a lack of recreational time leads to a lack of focus on any type of work, including business ownership.

If you have literally fallen totally out of love with the idea of being a business owner, then it’s time to put your focus elsewhere – on where you interests lay now. Sometimes that’s all that’s needed to give you that motivational push that you need.

Business ownership is a process just like any other. It doesn’t stay stagnant any more than you do. Maybe it’s time for a change, one that you’ll feel excited about focusing on.
