Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Each week we have been covering one of the experts from our team.  This week we’d like to introduce you to Louise Hull, our Systems & Technology Goddess.

Louise joined DemGen’s virtual team in early 2011, bringing over 30 years of diverse experience in progressive positions, ranging from working with successful entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 companies.

Her innate ability to quickly identify our clients’ individual needs allows her to develop and implement sustainable solutions to move their business forward.  Her passion for excellence ensures continuous improvement of systems and strategies, as well as exceptional customer service.

Louise’s expertise is in such high demand that she was flown out of the country to facilitate a client’s premier event, to huge success.  (It’s no wonder our client fondly refers to her as her ‘goddess’!)

In her own words:  At DemGen I enjoy having the ability to use varied talents rather than being pigeonholed with one brushstroke.  This atmosphere motivates you to develop new concepts, innovative ideas and mental stimulation.  Even better, the success and happiness you feel, is possible by working virtually from your home office.

A Review of Infusionsoft’s New Acquisition GroSocial

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on A Review of Infusionsoft’s New Acquisition GroSocial
Saturday, January 26th, 2013

When we heard the news of Infusionsoft’s latest acquisition earlier this week, we were excited (to say the least).

The news came on the heels of $54 million in funding from Goldman Sachs, so it’s sure been a busy week for Infusionsoft!

As we discussed in another post, we made the switch to Infusionsoft last year and haven’t looked back!  Naturally, the news of an application for social media had us intrigued…

After signing up for the free trial, it’s evident that there are both benefits and drawbacks to the system.

Pros

Integration with Infusionsoft is an obvious benefit, allowing opt-ins for email marketing through social media.

It’s a great system for beginners that are running a small business that need an easy way to setup Facebook and Twitter pages, especially if you’re doing it all yourself.

Key features include the ability to easily create Facebook cover images and Twitter backgrounds using Infusionsoft’s drag and drop format (without the need of a graphic designer), analytics reporting and simple set-up for Facebook contests and promotions.

If you’re new to the social media world and want an easy solution, this might be the right tool for you.

Con

The main drawback for GroSocial is that it only works with Facebook and Twitter.  If you have a strong presence on other platforms such as LinkedIn, Google+ or Pinterest, you will still need to use them as you have been.

Here at DemGen our virtual team has worked hard to create systems both internally and for our clients.  As much as we love Infusionsoft, we’re not quite sold on GroSocial enough to change our current systems.  (“If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.”)

Another issue we’ve come across is that the GroSocial servers weren’t ready for all of the new activity.  We’re sure this will be fixed soon, but not a great first impression.

The Bottom Line

GroSocial is definitely worth checking out to evaluate whether it’s the right solution for your business.  With a 30 day free trial (no credit card required), why not?

If you already have an established system in place and/or a team assisting you with social networking, you may be a bit underwhelmed.

If you are just starting out and don’t know where to start, GroSocial may be the perfect system for you.

Here are some key questions to ask yourself when evaluating:

  • Is your current social media strategy working effectively?
  • Do you use LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest or other platforms actively as part of your marketing mix?
  • Do you have a team assisting you with social networking and graphic design?

Let us know what you think in the comments section and don’t forget to check us out on social media!

Driving the Bus Deserves Your Full Focus

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Driving the Bus Deserves Your Full Focus
Thursday, January 10th, 2013

Scott Eblin, in his book The Next Level, makes some super suggestions for newly promoted managers. In this post, I take the liberty of adapting Scott’s advice for the benefit of new business owners and seasoned entrepreneurs.

Are you a person who works extra hard and gets things done? Have you always been fiercely self-sufficient? When you are ready to grow your business, it is time to build a team and let others do the work. You can get more done by supporting team members to use their skill sets and expertise in the functional roles that your business requires. For some owners, this requires a change of mindset.

The scope of work naturally expands with the growth of your business. Results are expected in more and more areas of expertise. In your crucial role as the business owner, your greatest results will come from using your genius abilities in the ways that maximize your value. How can you best perform that role? Delegate to others, so that you focus on tasks that only you can do.

Though you are ultimately accountable for the results of all who work on your behalf, your team will function best with clear goals and directions and the independence to use its expertise within the systems you’ve established. When you provide support, performance milestones and accountability, team members will figure out how to do the tasks using their expertise. You’ll get more done if you allow others to do what they do best.

There are tremendous benefits in learning from other entrepreneurs’ experience of what does and does not work in any given situation. You gain perspective and valuable insights by widening the scope of your radar beyond your own business model. Be open to the many resources available and network with others who have complementary business growth goals. Find a mentor. Be coachable. In this way, you can take a look at your company from the outside in.

Self-renewal is essential to be at your physical and mental prime. Adding more and more things to your own routine will surely lead to an eventual overload, so learn to set healthy boundaries and give yourself the time you need to recharge. Decide what is most important for you to do, focus on that and say “no” to all the rest.

The best way to ‘drive the bus’ is to give that job your full attention.

Helping Our Youth Look Forward to the Future

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Helping Our Youth Look Forward to the Future
Thursday, November 8th, 2012

As the mother of four teenagers (ages 19, 17, 16, 14), helping them feel positive about the future can be a big undertaking! Not only are we dealing with hormones, the change in the employment landscape means many differences from when I was their age as well. They have all had paper routes, dog walking gigs, and snow shoveling jobs to build their bank accounts and having your own money at any age is a very good thing!

A good number of jobs nowadays are not long term, many are contract or temporary so there isn’t job security and there are so many job seekers of all age groups and experience levels. According to this article in the Financial Post, “Youth unemployment today is nearly 15%, which is about twice the overall Canadian level.”

Our youth, this is based on ages 18 to 24, are stressing about their future. Many supplement income with credit cards and there is an increasing number moving back in with their parents.

So how do we help them see and experience a bright future?

Talk about it! Help them focus on exactly what it is they want to do.

Where do they want to work? What skills do they want to use? What are their goals in the next 3 to 5 years? (this helps decide some direction now.)

Take opportunities as they arise – Sure the job at Tim Horton’s or seasonal help at Coles book store may not be a long term solution, it does get them out in the work force … meeting people, learning new things, and every thing we do is a lesson which guides us onto the next stage of our life.

Consider working for themselves – This is an area we are looking at with our children. I started my own business 15 years ago, and haven’t looked back! Each of us has skills and abilities that can become a business. For example, our 17 year old is amazing with his hands and any tools, and he is not a people person while his 19 year old brother is a social magnet who could sell you just about anything … so they could partner in a business that includes both of their loves, while they support each other and earn some money.

Share in their journey – Celebrate the interview even if they did not get the job (so much can be learned), the part-time jobs that allowed them to buy the $100 pair of jean, and the money earned by shoveling the neighbour’s driveway. Support them when challenges arise as well, just talking about it gives them the opportunity to find resolution and decide how to proceed.

The future will seem brighter and more in our control if we can each take responsibility for ourselves and the generations to come!

Play a Bigger Game to Attract Abundance

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Play a Bigger Game to Attract Abundance
Thursday, September 20th, 2012

Today is where your book begins.  The rest is still un-written…..

The ocean is rough here today in Ft. Lauderdale.  Maybe as a result of the many emotions and big ideas uncovered here at Fabienne Fredricksons Mindset retreat.  An event I had the privilege of attending this week which helps transform your mindset to attract abundance and play a much BIGGER GAME in your business.  I met some incredible entrepreneurs; some I am sure I will get to know quite well as they are amazing women and I enjoyed every minute I spent with them.   Many we will do business with and DemGen will help them grow their businesses and play that big game they are destined for.  Some we will learn from and they will help us as our business grows.

Any way you slice it, I feel blessed. Overjoyed. Pumped.

The Mindset Retreat is not your average business seminar.   No classrooms or workshops.  No required learning.  But there were lots of hugs and sharing and some tears too.  It is three days of intense examination of your mindset and how it may be holding you back from achieving all that you are meant to achieve in your life and business.  The premise is brilliant and as a business development strategist I applaud Fabienne for leading the way here and sharing all that she has learned with the many entrepreneurs willing to dig deep inside and un-earth their blocks.

I dug deep.  I cried and hugged.  I did it all friends.  I am a better woman for it.

But I also made connections and networked with other entrepreneurs.  Authentic connections that feel great!  Tina and Dan Forsyth for example.  We work in the same circles and are members of her International Association of Online Business Manager’s, but they are also really great people and helping so many entrepreneurs with the many aspects of running their on-line businesses.

A big ‘Woohoo’ to you both.  😉

There are many ways to grow your business, and DemGen sure knows a thing or two about that.  But what the 300 people attending learned in sunny Florida this week is that it’s up to each of us to allow it to happen.  Attract it and recognize the signs when they come.

Woooohooooo!!

Success Comes to Those Who Act: Step Up and Implement

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Success Comes to Those Who Act: Step Up and Implement
Friday, August 31st, 2012

Implementing your chosen strategy—your Future Vision—is how to make your ‘dreams come true’. This is as true in running a business as in any venture: marriage, gardening, remodeling, retirement, world travel… even walking on the moon.

The late astronaut Neil Armstrong made history with the words, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” This momentous leap was made collaboratively by scores of men and women, who could envision, plan, design, test, learn and take risky steps—again and again—to execute a strategy that ultimately succeeded.

That’s how mankind reached the moon, the Mars rover reached its destination, and it’s how you and I can reach our business goals: taking small and inherently risky steps. Too much contemplation cripples us when regret of past shortcomings and anticipation of future failures cause us to miss the golden opportunity of the ‘now’: doing business in the present.

DemGen’s virtual team of experts supports and implements the entrepreneurial vision of successful clients every day. To create effective end results we use our collective eXecution Intelligence, also called XQ, to implement plans and get the job done. We launch products, communicate unique value propositions, let fly winged ideas and bravely test numerous ‘business babies’ to see: Can they walk? Will they run?

Successful entrepreneurs learn to sharpen their focus, enlist expert team members, trust their support, hand over the reins of responsibility, and take risks, as they implement strategic action steps. Choosing these same habits of operation can enhance your business too.

Do you want to harness the intelligence of your ideas with the intelligence of action to maximize your own XQ? Use these 3 steps, again and again:

  • Keep an uncluttered focus on producing one timely result.
  • Convert plans into simple steps and bravely act on them.
  • Don’t beat a ‘dead horse’ idea. Learn, let it go… “Next!”

Take smartly chosen risks and reap the rewards. Send your business “to the moon, Alice!” DemGen can help you get there.

Why Haven’t You Gone Virtual?

Posted by: admin | Comments (1)
Thursday, August 30th, 2012

What’s keeping you from taking that step toward making your company a virtual company?

Fear of change? Do you have problems with delegating or are you worried you’ll have to share control if you hire virtual workers?

What would it mean to your business and to you, personally, to change the way you’re presently working?

The changeover from a traditional business set up to a virtual office can be done, if you provide the right tools and hire employees that are the right fit.

The major impact that you’ll see right away is the savings on office space, personnel and equipment. After all, by giving up an equipped central or corporate office space, completely staffed, you have more money and time to invest in what is important – your business.

You can be your only employee, outsourcing tasks that you don’t have time for, don’t wish to take on or just don’t feel you have enough experience with to do the job properly. Or, as many small businesses do, you can hire a high quality virtual team, made up of individuals with unique abilities, able to take on a variety of projects for you.

If you are still concerned with monitoring and management, a collaborative site like Basecamp is useful for tracking any outsourced tasks as well as your own work. Planning ahead before you make the change to a virtual office will help your work to continue seamlessly and smoothly, gradually changing over your business to an office located from your home. During the transition, your clients should barely be aware that there is a huge change in progress.

Remember, if you aren’t going it alone, communication will be extremely important when collaborating with remote workers. Your goals and priorities will need to be made clear. Have regular meetings to reassess both, keep your objectives in mind and discuss any obstacles to success with your team.

With the increase in telecommuting at all levels of business and the advantages, such as increased productivity and environmental benefits, taking your business virtual may mean learning new skills and methods of communication. However, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Making the change will help to increase your confidence in your business, lead to increased savings and leave you more free time.

Health Tips for Entrepreneurs – Having the Energy for Your Small Business

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Health Tips for Entrepreneurs – Having the Energy for Your Small Business
Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Running your own business means staying in shape, both physically and mentally. Most small business owners thrive on the fast pace and love being busy but in order to do this for any length of time, it’s important to keep in mind that looking after yourself should be your number one priority.

What can you do to ensure your energy levels will remain high and that you’re doing the best you can for yourself?

Be committed to what you are doing. This means your business, your personal life and everything else you do. Decide what your priorities are, work hard at them and most of all, make sure you enjoy them. Dedicate yourself to what you are doing when you are doing it, whether it be your job, your family or relaxing. Focus on the moment instead of the other things that remain to be done.

Focus on your attitude. Remaining positive, even when it seems impossible, automatically helps you to relax. So many of us spend a lot of time worrying about all of the things that can go wrong. Changing our moods and teaching ourselves to turn off the pessimistic thoughts helps to keep our frame of mind positive.

Lower your stress levels by moving around more and getting involved in things outside of yourself.  Being physically active in any way we can, either by walking, exercise, whatever works for us, raises our energy and our moods while lowering anxiety and stress. Spending time with others allows us to focus on them instead of ourselves. For those who live alone, a pet is a great idea.

Get up early. Yes, it’s been said before but early risers tend to be more productive and get more done. This is the time of day many of us enjoy the most..we go for walks, have quiet time for ourselves, work in our gardens, write. If you are someone who just can’t get up early, consider changing your schedule around. Can you work nights? Evenings? Working when we’re at our best is what counts.

Plan ahead. Organization is important to a busy life. It’s when we fall behind on things that stress starts to take its toll on our work, our concentration and our ability to accomplish the most. Having a routine can be important. If there are certain things that need to be done every day, grouping them together and finishing them before we start on our work can give us that needed boost to get to the things we tend to put off doing.

Don’t forget to laugh. A sense of humor and being able to laugh at ourselves helps in the most stressful situations…try to look at the funny side of situations that annoy you.
