Yahoo Is Wrong: Telecommuting is the Way of the Future

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Yahoo Is Wrong: Telecommuting is the Way of the Future
Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

Despite what Yahoo may think, telecommuting is the way of the future. After an internal Yahoo memo was leaked to the Wall Street Journal on Friday about the company’s decision to not allow employees to telecommute, the internet has been rife with objections.

Here at DemGen we’ve built a successful business that’s helped countless entrepreneurs, virtually. We empathize with Yahoo employees who are now being forced to potentially spend hours commuting.

We’re clearly a bit biased in our belief that telecommuting is the way of the future, because it’s what we do and we’re great at it. In the wake of Yahoo’s news, we’re overjoyed to see the world agrees with us!

Forbes says Marissa Mayer is wrong, freedom for workers means productivity for companies. MSNBC warns the experts say telecommuting is here to stay. Harvard Business Review explains that virtual teams outperform traditional ones.

We’re keenly aware there is a portion of the market that isn’t ready to be convinced that telecommuting can increase results, revenue and productivity. Our clients understand this and it shows in our case studies and testimonials.

In working with countless successful entrepreneurs working form a home office and doing so internally, we’ve realized that the common trend is that we all need to force ourselves to stop working. Instead of counting down the hours to get out of the office, we’re excited to start working and don’t want to stop.

We do realize that there are certain things that can only be completed live.  We are speaking to all of the other tasks that could be completed in the time it takes to commute or have a water cooler conversation.  Let’s face it commuting is not motivational.  It’s also expensive and not good for the environment.

Going virtual and telecommuting is the way of the future.  It increases productivity and gets results. This trend clearly here to stay and will continue to grow.

Yay virtual!

The Pets That Support Our Virtual Team

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on The Pets That Support Our Virtual Team
Sunday, February 17th, 2013

For those of us that have the pleasure of working from a home office, we all know that there can be many distractions. Are these distractions welcome? Well, when it is a furry member of our family sometimes these distractions can be fun!

Our virtual team here at DemGen has a family full of pets to either enhance our days or cause those little bumps in the business world. February 20th is Love Your Pet Day so we wanted to share how we at DemGen manage our day to day work lives, while also including our cuddly creatures as well.

Pets can make it hard to get things done through the day. Do they want a walk when you really feel you don’t have the time? Do they walk across your keyboard as you try to type an important document? Do they bark for no reason just as you are starting a call? Is your desk covered with dog treats and cat toys? Is your lap full of lap dogs and not a laptop?

All of these things can be also viewed as needed productivity. If it is time to walk the dog view this time as a needed break for you also. You can come back rejuvenated and full of new ideas. If the cat is filling up your desk space view this time as a time to stay at your desk and push forward getting more and more done.  Who knows what that frisky feline will get up to if you leave him alone with your computer! The comfort we get from our pets is as therapeutic as it is hectic at times. When you are having a day that you feel is just not going well, a soft cuddly snuggle with Kitty or a game of fetch with Rover can be all that we need to help get our day back on track.

Giving our pets their own area in our workspaces will often help. Keep their beds or crates in the same area you are but not right beside you. They will enjoy the comfort of being near you but hopefully without too much distraction. Keep a ball or a play toy near or on your desk. As you are on a call, maybe a quick toss of the ball to Fido may just keep him distracted to keep the call going successfully.

We all love and cherish our pets as parts of the family and working from home can make that connection even better. Some of our DemGen family pets can be viewed below and remember Feb 20th is Love Your Pet Day…. But so is every other day!

Harry – Ragdoll/Persian cross cat. Owner: Chris Draper of DemGen. Harry is known for lending a helping hand when it really isn’t needed. His favorite pastime is to hit the redial button or even the speaker on Chris’ phone at most inopportune times!

Slink the mini dachshund and Charlieferb the Himalayan beauty. They are the best of pals that entertain Lisa Messervey of DemGen throughout her work day.

Smokey and Busta are the beautiful rescues of Tamara Smith of DemGen. Smokey is a tiny kitty that thinks she’s huge. She has stared down dogs and may think she is one, given she loves to fetch. Busta is an overly social character that loves to bring friends home to hang out, much to Smokey’s chagrin.

Maggie May (yes named for the Rod Stewart song, as she already had a cousin named Maggie) came to the home of Dan and Pam Christie, both of DemGen, as an 8 month old rescue chocolate lab/beagle mix. Initially she was scared of everything from brooms to people. Now 3 years later Maggie May has adjusted to and loves the stream of people in and out of the busy business-based house each day. As you can see she is a Detroit Red Wings Fan and her never ending love is a blessing to this family. Just watch the tail go when you say T R E A T!

Introducing Shih-tzu’s Tucker (left) and Willow (right) owned by Kim Miller of DemGen. Tucker is 10 years old and loves to spend his time napping during the work day when Willow lets him. Willow is a typical 10 month old playful puppy and she loves to spend time on a lap in place of a laptop!

Thanks for taking the time to enjoy our pets as much as we do!

Each week we have been covering one of the experts from our team.  This week we’d like to introduce you to Louise Hull, our Systems & Technology Goddess.

Louise joined DemGen’s virtual team in early 2011, bringing over 30 years of diverse experience in progressive positions, ranging from working with successful entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 companies.

Her innate ability to quickly identify our clients’ individual needs allows her to develop and implement sustainable solutions to move their business forward.  Her passion for excellence ensures continuous improvement of systems and strategies, as well as exceptional customer service.

Louise’s expertise is in such high demand that she was flown out of the country to facilitate a client’s premier event, to huge success.  (It’s no wonder our client fondly refers to her as her ‘goddess’!)

In her own words:  At DemGen I enjoy having the ability to use varied talents rather than being pigeonholed with one brushstroke.  This atmosphere motivates you to develop new concepts, innovative ideas and mental stimulation.  Even better, the success and happiness you feel, is possible by working virtually from your home office.

Who Do You Trust Your Business With?

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Who Do You Trust Your Business With?
Monday, January 7th, 2013

Imagine, one of your most precious assets in your life (your company), and you seek  to hire the cheapest possible talent to care for it!  I’m not against finding a good deal or making the lowest investment for the highest return.  But, let’s face it – if you feel you are getting away with a super duper deal at someone else’s expense, lack of self-worth or experience to negotiate – it’s probably not a win for you in the end.

I was looking for a cleaner on Craigslist and came across this ad…

F144757393

Of course I immediately translated this to the business world and see the same thing en masse.

Let’s STOP the madness!  If your business provides your life force fuel (job satisfaction, mastery of skills, money, etc) for you and possibly many other people, is it not worth a deeper investment to find the right fit vs. the cheapest labor source?

I’ve seen it many times, where we (DemGen) have come into a situation where we are cleaning up after the other cheaper or sometimes more expensive but less effective babysitter.  We come on board to find there were no or inefficient systems created, lack of internal/external communications, no documentation, redundancy of tasks, too many chefs, disorder/chaos and slow to no growth.  The entrepreneur didn’t feel confident to take time off and had to micro-manage.  What’s the sense of hiring a babysitter and then staying home to watch over things?

DemGen played a little joke (or what we thought was a joke) for April Fools last year.  We wanted something that was a little far-fetched, and yet not out of reach and certainly possible for us to handle.  We laid out a special offer for business sitters.  And guess what?  It worked!  We had live, real feedback wanting to know more.  In essence, we do actually care for your business, so it’s not a stretch.  If you were to go away for a few months could your business thrive or even survive?

THIS IS NOT A JOKE:  If that’s your goal, we can support you in accomplishing it!  Just send us an email to schedule a discovery call so we can find out more about each other.  HINT:  This should be a goal for all, whether you are going away for a little while or not, it’s not a sellable business if it can’t run without you.

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas at DemGen

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas at DemGen

borderlys

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all desks were clear
The joyous laughter with family was all you could hear
The work was completed before holidays with glee
In hopes for festive times with friends and family

All to dos were crossed off with a sigh of relief
While entrepreneurs celebrated a day without grief
With Gary in his Santa suit and Pam hanging a stocking
They ensured the holidays were a time for rocking

When suddenly online there arose such a chatter
They had to log on to see what was the matter
Away from their duties they ran in a dash
Checking emails and statuses quick as a flash

Because they consider all clients family too
If there was an emergency, they’d know what to do
When what to their wondering eyes would appear
But multiple thanks for holding clients’ businesses dear

With business growth coming efficiently and quick
Some were even referring to Gary as St Nick
Even more messages praised Pam and the Team
Humble by nature, they couldn’t help but beam

Now Kimberley!  Now Kim!  Now Chris and Dan…
And multiple messages calling Gary ‘the man’
With so much joy their hearts may explode
They were grateful to help with clients’ workload

Each working virtually within their own expert skills
Providing solutions for businesses gave them great thrills
Rolling up their sleeves at the drop of a dime
They were on top of everything all of the time

Seeing such great feedback in front of their eyes
Filled their hearts with thanks for the lovely surprise
Looking forward to more fun in 2013 and beyond
Working with clients of which they were so fond

And on that note they finally decided to unplug
Returning to their families to give a big hug
As they turned off their tech and put it out of sight
They said aloud, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

The Question that Hamlet Didn’t Ask… and Why Asking Will Benefit You

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on The Question that Hamlet Didn’t Ask… and Why Asking Will Benefit You
Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

Most entrepreneurs have ingrained in their ‘business DNA’ Hamlet’s classically famous question: To be or not to be? They use this query each time a new challenge or opportunity crosses their business radar, and it helps them respond to inevitable changes in the marketing landscape with new products and services.

But many business owners—and perhaps you are among them—neglect to ask another equally important question. As a result, they are routinely overwhelmed ‘being all there is to be’ and doing all there is to do in their business. They do more, to get more done, to be more successful, to be able to do more, to get more done, to be more, to do more, to be, to do… Whew!

Now can you guess the other strategically important question?

To do or not to do?

Aha! That is the question that so many entrepreneurs neglect to ask themselves. And they often pay a big price by doing it all themselves! There is another way:

  • Delegate virtually. Avoid the exhaustion that comes when you fill all the roles, manage all the details and juggle all the balls of business execution.
  • Hire the best team. Expert skills get the best job done with the latest technology to market and deliver your product or service.
  • Increase efficiency. An expert with genius abilities spends less time to perform a task. You are free to balance work, play, friends and family. J
  • Save money. Virtual assistance provides the valuable skills and task performance you need while using less revenue than full-time hires.
  • Gain perspective. A solopreneur benefits in many ways—planning, prioritizing, marketing strategy, to name a few—from the advice and coaching of seasoned business growth experts.

At DemGen, our business is growing your business. We will help you live the life of your dreams. Give us a call. ‘Tis a noble choice!

Using the Right Tool: The Screw vs The Hammer

Posted by: admin | Comments Comments Off on Using the Right Tool: The Screw vs The Hammer
Monday, December 3rd, 2012

On the weekend I had a couple of little projects to complete in the garage.  One was installing a bracket to hang my ladder on.  (This has been a way overdue project.)  I finally bought the bracket and set out to install it…

Half way through the second screw, my drill gave out.  The battery was out of juice.  No problem!  I switched to the back up, but it was out of juice as well.

Eager to complete the task and not wanting to go into the basement to find an old school screwdriver, I grabbed the other tool I had at hand – my hammer.  While it did the job, it was not pretty or efficient as it would have been, had I waited the hour for a fully charged battery pack.

Okay, so yes, I’ll admit I’m not Mr. Fixit.  But it did get me thinking about using the right tool for the job.  I remember not having the right tool at other times and specifically recalled a time when I was trying to take some old wood apart that had nails and screws holding it in place.  Again, I just used the hammer, and again not the best outcome.

I realized this happens in business a lot.  I constantly come across entrepreneurs that, as I have done on many occasions, did not use the right skill set to accomplish a certain task.  The years in businesses past where I thought everything could work out with just a hammer (i.e. just me and my skills or lack of).  Having a team is so much better!  For instance, this post originated with me, was edited by someone else and posted by yet another.

Using the right tools for the job, whatever they may be, ensures a greater outcome in the long run.

The Benefits of Going Virtual

Posted by: admin | Comments (2)
Monday, November 26th, 2012

In honor of Cyber Monday, we’re celebrating the benefits of working virtually!

Increased Productivity

Virtual teams aren’t limited by the distractions of typical offices. There are no water cooler distractions or constant interruptions. Many studies have proven that virtual teams work longer and harder than their counterparts in office buildings.

Better Tools & Systems

To effectively work in cyberspace, virtual teams utilize a number of tools and systems to communicate and stay organized. This tends to lead to increased creativity and accountability.

Expert Team

When not limited by proximity (good parking, subway, childcare), you are free to hire the best of the best. This opens up your business to a world of opportunities, literally.

Reduced Costs

Most virtual teams are paid by the hour or project, meaning you only pay for what you require. You don’t pay for coffee or lunch breaks, computers or any other of the many expenses required for a typical office. *And keep in mind that there are reduced costs to the virtual support team, with no parking, travel, lunch, dry cleaning, etc. Overall, win, win, win for all including the environment.

Less Impact on the Environment

By eliminating the need to commute, virtual workers eliminate pollution from transportation. Eliminating commuting time also ensures virtual workers start their day fresh and ready to dive in.

The bottom line is that virtual teams are constantly growing and are here to stay. As technology continues to develop, more and more individuals will choose to work virtually. Corporations have already begun to follow suit and will continue to do so as they realize the potential benefits.

Going virtual with inside support has been a positive breakthrough; helping us to better navigate the challenging path of managing resources while being productive and focused. Our referral of DemGen to numerous clients and associates of our own in a relatively short time frame speaks directly to the high regard with which we view them.

DemGen continues to meet or exceed our expectations – and we believe that is a strong endorsement given the leadership league we operate in.

Thank you DemGen!
